Hey guys, this is my first post but I've been long term reader of the forum. I'm looking into purchasing a Geomax robot and was hoping someone might have first hand knowledge. I done some searches on the forum but not a whole lot of information out there.
I really like the price and the ability to use carlson DC with this setup.

To make a long story short, I have recently taken over a existing business. The previous owner has retired and hasn't really done much work in the past few years, so my work load as of now isn't enough to hire a full time employee. I'm still have working for a larger company so Im mostly working on the weekends until I feel somewhat comfortable to go full time. The majority of my work is smaller to medium lots (1/2-5 acre lots) with some layout work (I hope to pick up more layout work in the spring). This will be my first experience with robotics and look forward to being able to go solo ASAP. Thanks in advance

I am running a Carlson surveyor+ with the long range Bluetooth adapter and a Lecia TCRP 1203. It's pretty much the same exact setup you're looking at except the outside of my instrument is painted green where yours will be yellow. Basically the way I understood it (and I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong) is that Leica introduced the new TS12 and TS15 models and discontinued the 1200 series. Those are now being marketed as Geomax brand. It's an excellent setup.

My friend has the Geomax version and it actually uses the Leica 1200 series instrument profile in Carlson (that's how similar they are). I think he has an Allegro data collector, but that's neither here nor there.

The power search option is an excellent feature. If you have never surveyed robotically before it is definitely a little different. You have to keep the pole up and above your head so the robot doesn't lose you. (don't put the pole down) that kind of stuff.

HI Aaron,

I have had a GeoMax for appx. 2 years.
It has performed as expected with no major problems.
Occasionally, after losing the prism it will search very
slowly instead of using Power Search, but you can push some
buttons to get it back from it's temporary insanity.
What I have been told is that this instrument is made in
Switzerland, but not in the Leica factory. It is, however as
Dan said a Leica 1200 with a yellow and white package.
I am controlling it with an Allegro MX (built in Leica radio link)
with Carlson SURVce software. This was my first experience with Carlson
and I found it quite "surveyor friendly". The only drawback I can
see to buying the GeoMax is service. There are few dealers around.

I bought mine from Allen Precision and will have to send it to Atlanta
for any work. If you go through Allen, ask for Donna George in sales, she is
most helpful.

Mr. Patterson,
Can you elaborate on the communications setup between the Carlson Surveyor+ and the instrument? I have a Surveyor+ running an older Topcon Robot, and am looking to upgrade my robot. What will I need for the Surveyor+ to communicate with the Geomax/Leica? does the Geomax/Leica have built in long range bluetooth? Will I need an external bluetooth adapter on my Surveyor+?

Thanks for your help.

Dale Yawn

The TCRP 1203+ that I have came with the long range Bluetooth communication handle on top of the robot. I do have to plug in a little Parani USB long range Bluetooth adapter into the collector. Sometimes I'm nervous about snapping it off or something but I think we all try not to drop or smash the data collector most of the time anyway.

It looks like this:

If you're familiar with Leica; you will probably like it. I rented one recently and did not like it. My experience is with Trimble and Topcon robots and I spent the whole day trying to figure that thing out!!

Welcome friend. Excellent first thread. I am watching with interest as I am a fan of Carlson and a long time Leica robot user.

I have been very frustrated in the past with Leica customer service.

I have been very pleased however with Carlson customer service.

I used Leica for a while and had good service and Tech support. I also used Allen Precision for this recent purchase and they have good tech support as well (so far I only needed it once so I don't have a ton of experience with them.)

I used Trimble a while back, and while I loved their robots and GPS the tech support in my area was terrible.

Hi,
I am new to the forum too. Am looking at upgrading my station to robotics for layout work. However I would like to know, do you use mini prisms for layout and how would you be able to juggle the collector and the prism while doing the layouts.

Cheers,

Jan

Carlson Robotic TS

Another option, which will aid in continuity of support, is to buy your robot through Carlson. They market the Zoom80 as the Carlson Robot (just Carlson stickers, but same gun).

For what its worth, I've tested out to 240m with the Carlson Mini2 and the LRBT handle on the Zoom80, no Parani necessary.

Word. That is the plan. Whenever I need a new robot I plan to buy whatever Carlson is selling.

I have a Geomax 2" robot. The hardware for the instrument has been reliable. I have have had some issues with the DC which has been disappointing to say the least. I also think it is ridiculous to need a Parani usb booster for Bluetooth connection. Maybe I am just to old school but the optical plummet is the laser pointer which I hate. I would much rather use a tri-brach with the optical plummet instead of trying to figure out where exactly the center of the light is.

The price is right and I hear that the new Carlson Surveyor 2 has extended range for the robot. In all I am pleased with the robot. I would wait until they not only release the Surveyor 2, but also work out the kinks from the Surveyor 2.

That is my 0.02'

I know what you mean about the laser plummet. I replaced the Geomax
tribrach with a Leica type heavy duty optical. The only application
for the laser I would consider would be during night use or setting up
over a mon in a deep mon well.

I have a TCRA1102plus with the laser plummet. While I would prefer an optical plummet, I really like having the plummet in the alidade, since that makes checking the adjustment so quick and easy. Switching to an optical plummet tribrach would mean having to check the tribrach periodically, which is a nuisance. So I live with the laser, and do a lot of squatting down and standing up to make sure I'm over the point.
