What does a Chief of Parties do on his day off.
Breaks a sweat lugging around two GAK sets for fun....

Geez, there's a lot of stuff here.

We have two instruments, John Noltons T16 and an "Ooops, did I buy that on ebay" T2.
Funny story that one. Moral is, don't drink and make "a best offer", they might just take you up on it.

Add the GAKs and we're still nowhere near done...

We still have to wire all this together and haul in the car battery.
I think I'll let the GF carry the battery, my back is feeling a bit touchy today.

How about a centerfold shot?

Should have "photoshopped" that last one a tad...

Now all I have to do is determine the calibration value "E", which is the angle between the plane of the meridian and the telescopes line of sight.
Then determine constant "c", ("Delta N") which is dependent on latitude and is a correction to the gyros North.
We then do a "quick method" observation of two reversal points to find approximate north and then we can either use the transit method or the reversal point method to complete the observations.

I cheated and carried an astronomic azimuth into my garage a while back to compare with the GAK determination.

My favorite T-2, with striding level and Horrebow level.
You'll never see another one like this.

I also cheated a little on the deviaition of the vertical...

Now, where's that car battery and the GF?

Great pics

of some great equipment. You do need a mule to haul of it though. And NO I did not mean your girl friend.

It would be interesting to compare the accuracy (or repeatibility) of the GAK2 units against my ARK2 unit, which is a single piece instrument. I haven't used a GAK2 since 1986, but I believe the operation is the same as the ARK2.

The ARK2 is, by spec, a less accurate instrument. The optics are not as good, and it is not a 1" gun. But, one nice feature (for doing azimuths, anyway) is the endless horizontal drive knob, makes it easier to follow the oscillations. And also the nice sighting target on top for sighting to the gyro:

I have (finally) completed my astro range in the yard. I have an instrument pillar and a smaller pillar for the azimuth mark. So far I have done one set with an S6 and another with a T2 (both using leading edge of the moon). I also recently did some GPS and triangulateration on those two and 5 other stations that form a small network.
