Florida's "checklist" - the votes

I'm glad the author of this bill has such a stellar record of protecting the public while in office...

http://www.tampabay.com/news/politics/elections/article1153652.ece

In city and county government, officials must abstain from voting on matters that could benefit them personally, but the rules are different in Tallahassee.

Senators and representatives are allowed to vote on matters in which they have a financial stake as long as they disclose it up to 15 days after the vote is cast. And Florida ethics laws say it's legal for elected officials to vote on matters that affect their own professions.

During the past five years, dozens of legislators have filed voting conflict forms in cases where they had conflicts of interest.

• Rep. Esteban Bovo, R-Hialeah, voted to shield his employer, Miami Children's Hospital, from budget cuts.

Yep, Mr. Bovo is really worried that requiring a license to survey might do more harm than good.

Here's the headers I can read:

1. Number of in-state practitioners
2. Is not indispensable to the public health or safety
3. ?? significant disciplinary action taken
4. Does not require profession specific examination ?? education, courses etc.
5. Designed only to limit competition
6. Is regulated by other entities
7. Consumers can be protected by other means

I notice that we were told only one person from FSMS was allowed to speak, but I see plenty of representation from other professionals....

The coffin nails as I see them

> 5. Designed only to limit competition
> 7. Consumers can be protected by other means

Two check marks in two areas sealed the fate of surveyors in Florida. Though I have never worked in Florida, and never will I hope (I hate humid places) I know that number 5 and 7 are just 100% incorrect.

Has anyone researched the original bill that required surveyors to become licensed in Florida? If you can prove that number 5 is wrong, number 7 will follow suit in getting these nails out of the coffin.

I hope the best for all you guys.

Anyone know how they arrived at those determinations?

In particular, how did they come up with the idea that Surveying licensure is "Designed only to limit competition"?

How about "Is regulated by other entities"... What other entities regulate Surveying in Florida?

And "Consumers can be protected by other means"... How? By ILCs and other surveys that are not done to any standards and do not involve monumentation? Or is there something else? Maybe the good will of the title companies and real estate brokers...?

I have been digging through all the documents on line for the committee and can not find that chart! it's the chair's document, but it's not showing up in any of the online pdfs.

Sad that in doing research, I find websites for mold workers, realtors, condo people and HAIR BRAIDERS but not one site (save this one and a tiny article in PS) shows up on the topic.

Florida's "checklist" - the votes

Wendell... I'm not one for carving the board up, but it occurs to me that all this Florida stuff may be tiring for surveyors in other states.

Would we be better putting these in the "legal" issues or just leave them in surveying?
