Got to do a 3km river floodline survey to determine the 50 year floodline on the eerste river outside Stellenbosch. They wanted cross sections every 300-500 m , about 100m either side of river centerline. Loaded up an S6 robot, an R6 gps , tripod, gum boots and a machete.
Started at 11 am, did last crossing at 4pm, used the gps for the open stuff and robot to resect off the prism under the GPS to do the river crossings and under canopy stuff. No control or traversing needed, hardest part was crossing the river and fences.
My legs are feeling it now though, that S6 hard case strapped to your back for a few hours is a killer. Next time I might try a soft carry case...any ideas on a backpack soft case for an S6 ?
My assistant with rover and prism, I am following with tripod and Robot
About to resect off the rover / prism simultaneously... the machete is as mean as it looks....
The river after having been recently cleared of aliens
Unfortunate flood victim.
I can back you up about hurting after packing around that hard case. I loved the S6 I used to use, but hated packing the hard case. My former boss would use it now and then and he, being a good bit bigger than me, would re-adjust all the straps that I adjusted for me.
yeh - thats hard yacka as we say here.
Done my fair share of river surveys but they have an enjoyable side.
I have a bushwalking pack that is very comfortable and can carry delicate gear (Total Station in my instance) with ease and safety.
I haven't seen a decent 'soft case' for instruments but admit thats limited experience.
I'm just using what I have in stock.
Lee,
tough job, but you did finish the fieldwork in a day!
We recently had a televison show here with Belgian celebreties doing all kind of challenges, it was shot around Stellenbosh and very nice to see.
thanks for sharing!

One of the best things about this board. You get to see surveying all over the world!
