I am having problems again downloading my first series Ranger data collector. It was working well for a while but it will not transfer data any longer to my pc that is using windows 7. I am using Carlson survey 2004. When I got to transfer my data, I get an error in the TDS data collection box that states "Error in file transfer -614, Remote system not obeying protocol" Has anyone got this error before and if you have, how have you fixed it? My settings are COM PORT:COM1, BAUD 4800, PARITY:NONE. I am connecting to the computer using a usb cable with a 9 pin adapter and they are all null connections. I am stumped as to why it won't work. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get it to properly transfer data, I would appreciate it.
Thank You
Are you using Carlson XPort or another.
I have seen this problem discussed here before, it seems like the com port somehow gets mixed up and you have to assign it back to the appropriate one.
In other words, com 1 somehow becomes com 2 or what ever and has to be reassigned. That is just what I have seen in the past, it may or may not be YOUR problem, but it is my .02, hope it helps.

I don't know what Carlson XPort is. I just go through the processes through the software. I go to Tools, choose Data Collectors, and then choose TDS. Then go through the process on Data Collection. I don't know if that helps out or not
When Windows does an update and/or does a security check by some name brand products on your computer, Carlson's connectivity abilities are altered and stop working.
Carlson XPort is a data file management and transfer program download that you may qualify for if you currently have SurvCE and/or other Carlson products.
I haven't used a ranger like yours, but when I was still using com ports to download my Trimble units I found a work around. Try opening device manager and disable com1 or whichever com port you're using. Wait a few moments, then re-enable the port. This seems to clear out whatever Windows is doing in the background that makes the port not work to begin with. If my memory is correct, this fixes it until your computer is rebooted.
Can you just export/download to a stick? Or doesn't the "first series" have a USB port?
I butted heads with issue for awhile on this technology gap, with my personal ranger & windows 7 laptop. Finally ended up dropping $100 on an old rehabed HP tower w/ a 9-pin & usb, running xp; only thing I use it for is data transfer to the ranger, using activesync.
