Did a boundary today, but I came across something I've never seen before while measuring up the building. It looked like a cellar access, 6.5'x4' made of concrete block, about 5' deep. No steps, and it didn't look like the foundation had been patched. Any ideas out there? I'm wondering what to label it on the plat.
Might have been a "light well" and the window was removed and replaced with concrete.
jud
Sounds a little big for a coal shute.
Foundation is concrete block, house is circa 1940? The foundation looks original. There were lag bolts / rotted wood laying on top of this particular feature, so there was some kind of structure on top of it at one time.
Sounds like a cistern maybe?
That was the first thing that I thought of, but the cisterns I've seen in this area are usually away from the house with a MH type concrete flat-top and a metal access cover. I can't think of what else it might be.
Did there used to be a door there and it was a foundation for a stoop?
I agree about the coal chute.
Where are you SJK? I am at VBC but get around. You can message me privately if you want.
Possible; the house was recently re-sided with vinyl siding.
I'm still surveying in NH. I'll be in Kandahar early next year. That's last years pic from Yuma, Az.
There's your Feature Description:
Possible remaining foundation for abandoned stoop.

I called it "Concrete Block Foundation". I actually met the client there this afternoon to exchange the plats for a check. It was a foundation for a well house. There was a pump down in the pit that was covered with junk, which is why I didn't see it. She is renting the house out, and wants to connect to city water, but could't find her old plat. Turns out she owns a rental unit across the street, which is next on the list. If she doesn't find the plat for that one she said she'll be giving me a call for that one too.
