STATION DESCRIPTION
DESCRIBED BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1917
ABOUT 1 MILE W OF SPENCERVILLE POST OFFICE, AND 3 MILES ESE OF
SANDY SPRINGS POST OFFICE, ON LAND OWNED (IN 1868) BY ASA
STABLER. STATION IS ON THE FLAT SUMMIT OF A RIDGE WHICH IS COVERED
WITH ORCHARDS AND ORNAMENTAL TREES AND SHRUBS, AND IS CLOSE TO THE
BOUNDARY FENCE BETWEEN THE ORCHARD OF W.P. MILLER AND A FIELD OF
A.M. STABLER. UNDERGROUND MARK IS A SHORT-NECKED QUART BOTTLE,
FILLED WITH ASHES, AND HAVING INSERTED IN ITS NOSE A PIECE OF
TRACING MUSLIN ON WHICH WERE WRITTEN THE NAME OF THE STATION,
ITS PURPOSE, AND ITS LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE. THIS BOTTLE WAS
PLACED AT A DEPTH OF 3.75 FEET. THE SURFACE MARK WAS A FREESTONE
POST, 30 INCHES LONG AND 6-3/4 INCHES SQUARE ON TOP, WHICH WAS
DRESSED SMOOTH AND HAD THE LETTERS U.S.C.S. CUT UPON IT.
THE TOP OF THE STONE WAS ABOUT 2 INCHES ABOVE THE SURFACE OF
THE GROUND. FOUR REFERENCE POSTS WERE PLACED AROUND THE
CENTER MARK, EACH CONSISTING OF A FREESTONE POST, 30 INCHES LONG
WITH TOP 5 INCHES SQUARE, HAVING THE LETTERS U.S.C.S. CUT
THEREON. THE TOPS OF THESE POSTS WERE PLACED 2 INCHES ABOVE THE
GROUND. THESE REFERENCE POSTS FORM A SQUARE, THE CENTER OF EACH
STONE BEING EXACTLY 5 FEET FROM THE STATION, AND THE SIDES
PARALLEL TO THE CENTER MONUMENT. IN THE RECOVERY OF 1917 IT
WAS REPORTED THAT THESE REFERENCE STONES HAD PROBABLY BEEN
SLIGHTLY DISTURBED BY PLOUGHING.
STATION RECOVERY (1927)
RECOVERY NOTE BY PUB BLDGS AND PARKS 1927
FOUR STAKES WERE FIRMLY DRIVEN AND NAILS PUT IN THEM SO THAT WHEN
STRINGS WERE STRETCHED BETWEEN EACH PAIR THEY CROSSED AT RIGHT
ANGLES AND EXACTLY OVER THE CENTER OF THE SURFACE STONE. (THE
CENTER STONE DID NOT HAVE A CROSS MARK BUT A MARK WAS PUT AS NEAR
AS POSSIBLE IN THE CENTER.) THE SURFACE STONE WAS TAKEN OUT AND
THE SUB-SURFACE MARKER UNCOVERED.
CONDITION OF MONUMENT AS FOUND--6-INCH SQUARE FREESTONE POST 26
INCHES LONG WITH TOP 1 INCH ABOVE SURFACE OF GROUND AND WITH LETTERS
U.S.C.S. CUT UPON IT AS DESCRIBED IN C. AND G.S. MANUAL. THE
UNDERGROUND WAS A QUART GLASS BOTTLE FILLED WITH ASHES, THE TOP OF
THE BOTTLE BEING 3 FEET 0 INCH BELOW SURFACE AND THE BOTTOM 3
FEET 9 INCHES BELOW SURFACE.
AS SOON AS THE TOP OF THE BOTTLE WAS UNCOVERED, THE PLUMB BOB WAS
DROPPED FROM THE STRING INTERSECTION AND FOUND TO BE ABOUT 1/4
INCH OFF THE CENTER OF THE BOTTLE OPENING. THE STRINGS WERE
ADJUSTED SO THAT THEY CROSSED EXACTLY OVER THE CENTER OF THE
BOTTLE OPENING AND THE BOTTLE WAS THEN TAKEN OUT. THE HOLE WAS
THEN DUG TO A DEPTH OF 4 FEET 9 INCHES AND THE BOTTLE CAREFULLY
REPLACED VERTICALLY UNDER ITS ORIGINAL POSITION. THE TOP OF
THE BOTTLE NOW BEING 4 FEET 0 INCH BELOW SURFACE. EARTH WAS
FILLED IN OVER THE BOTTLE TO A DEPTH OF 4 INCHES AND CAREFULLY
TAMPED.
THE STONE SURFACE POST WAS NEXT PLACED IN A VERTICAL POSITION
BENEATH THE INTERSECTION OF THE STRINGS, EARTH BEING FILLED AROUND
IT UNTIL IT WAS WITHIN 10 INCHES OF THE TOP OF THE STONE, THE TOP
NOW BEING 18 INCHES BELOW SURFACE. A 12-INCH TERRA-COTTA PIPE WAS
SLIPPED DOWN OVER THE STONE ABOUT 9 OR 10 INCHES UNTIL THE TOP
WAS 1 INCH ABOVE SURFACE OF GROUND.
EARTH WAS FILLED IN THE PIPE AROUND THE STONE UNTIL IT WAS 2
INCHES ABOVE TOP OF STONE AND TAMPED. THE HOLE AROUND THE OUTSIDE
OF THE PIPE WAS NEXT FILLED TO THE TOP AND TAMPED AND THE
REMAINDER OF THE INSIDE OF THE PIPE WAS FILLED WITH CONCRETE
(ABOUT 17 INCHES DEEP). A P.B. AND P.P. TRIANGULATION MARKER WAS
EMBEDDED IN THE CONCRETE SO THAT ITS CENTER WAS EXACTLY
BELOW THE STRING INTERSECTION. BROKEN PIECES OF TERRA-COTTA
WERE SCATTERED AROUND TO AID IN LOCATION IN THE FUTURE.
THE FOUR FREESTONE POSTS WERE FOUND TO BE SLIGHTLY OFF (NOT MORE
THAN 1/2 INCH) THEIR PROPER POSITIONS WHICH WERE 5 FEET 0 INCH FROM
CENTER STONE.
STATION RECOVERY (1933)
RECOVERY NOTE BY COAST AND GEODETIC SURVEY 1933 (RDH)
THE STATION IS ABOUT 4 MILES N OF COLESVILLE, 3 MILES ESE OF
SANDY SPRINGS POST OFFICE, 1 MILE W OF SPENCERVILLE POST OFFICE,
ON TOP OF THE HILL ABOUT 0.2 MILE S OF BROWNS CORNER (WHICH IS ON
ROUTE 27), ON PROPERTY OWNED BY MR. NEWTON STABLER. IT IS NEAR
THE NE CORNER OF A FIELD, ABOUT 150 YARDS FROM STABLERS HOUSE, 84
YARDS NW OF CENTER LINE OF GRAVELED LANE, 4 YARDS SW OF N END OF
A ROW OF PEACH TREES, 5 YARDS NNW OF A SMALL TREE, AND 3 YARDS SE
OF A BUSH. THE MARK IS A P.B. AND P.P. COPPER DISK SET IN THE
CENTER OF THE TOP OF A 12-INCH TILE FILLED WITH CONCRETE, AND IS
SET FLUSH WITH THE GROUND. IT IS STAMPED STABLER 1933.
THREE OF THE FREESTONE REFERENCE POSTS WERE RECOVERED AND
FOUND TO BE THE FOLLOWING DISTANCES FROM THE STATION--NE, 5.00
FEET, SE 5.17 FEET, SW 503 FEET. THE NW POST WAS NOT SEARCHED
FOR. IT HAS APPARENTLY BEEN COVERED WITH EARTH.
TWO NEW REFERENCE MARKS AND AN AZIMUTH MARK WERE
ESTABLISHED. NO.1 IS ABOUT 6
INCHES ABOVE GROUND SURFACE. IT IS SSE OF STATION, IN WIRE FENCE
LINE, 7 YARDS SW OF SE CORNER OF FENCE, 13 YARDS SW OF 4TH
TELEPHONE POLE FROM PAVED ROAD, AND ABOUT 50 YARDS SW OF
T-JUNCTION OF GRAVELED ROADS. NO.2 (AZIMUTH) IS SW OF
STATION, 12 YARDS E OF CENTER LINE OF HIGHWAY 27, IN FRONT
OF A BROWN HOUSE. NO.3 IS WSW OF STATION, IN WIRE
FENCE LINE, 5 YARDS ENE OF A LARGE OAK. IT IS ABOUT 6 INCHES
ABOVE GROUND.
STATION RECOVERY (1939)
RECOVERY NOTE BY WASH SUBURB SAN COMM 1939
1 MI W FROM SPENCERVILLE.
ON SANDY SPRING ROAD, AT THE JUNCTION OF A DIRT ROAD LEADING NORTH
TO THE OLD STABLER PROPERTY, NORTH OF THE MAIN ROAD, ON THE FLAT
SUMMIT OF A RIDGE COVERED WITH ORCHARDS AND ORNAMENTAL TREES AND
SHRUBS, NEAR THE NORTHEAST CORNER OF A FIELD, ABOUT 150 YARDS
FROM THE STABLER HOUSE, 84 YARDS NORTHWEST OF THE CENTERLINE OF
THE GRAVEL LANE, 4 YARDS SOUTHWEST OF THE NORTH END OF A ROW OF
PEACH TREES, 5 YARDS NORTH-NORTHWEST OF A SMALL TREE, AND 3 YARDS

Wow!
I've been there doing recon with a handheld GPS. The reset point is on the shoulder possibly near the edge of pavement right in front of a residence. For some reason I assumed the point was buried, perhaps it is in one of those recovery notes. You might need some county permissions to dig there as well as talking to the people.
Another difficult but old station in this area whose underground mark may possibly still exist is SOPER. It is now under a temporary trailer at a construction site for the new Paint Branch High School. Based on GPS I did there a few years back when it was on a vacant lot, the underground mark there could still exist although the surface marks were probably lost based on elevation. This is a very old station. If it still exists it will probably not be there much longer as I suspect once the trailer is removed the original grade will be removed.
Let me know if you want more info.

jerry, how about a little flagging and paint? lol
yes, i DID look up 'soper' recently, should go dig it up,too. send me your details on it. my cousin is a coach at paint branch, that might help, too.
as far as getting county permission, i am the party chief for moco d.o.t., so i think i'll just go ahead and do it(smiling).
