Just wondering what ideas people have for surveying facades. Some of them tend to be quite complex and I'm thinking pure linework may not be sufficient.
eg:
We've opted to model facades for some projects, but I'm waiting for the day when a client comes back with a "What's this 3d stuff? We can't use that" complaint.
So, what do you guys do?
Are you using POD files in SketchUp for your modeling?
It depends on the purpose of the survey.
Generally, I like to pick up the building foundation, at ground level and note it as such on my survey.
Be careful with tricky things like basement under the sidewalk. I did a survey of a downtown area. When they started doing the demo for construction; they broke out a walk and found that someone had expanded the building's basement out under the walk, into the street right-of-way.....oops.
Looks like a laser scan project to me.
You could take a whole bunch of hi-def digital pictures and model it in Autodesk 3DCatch. Did that w/ my 69 Chevy PU Truck. Looked OK, but needed work.

As complex as the facade is, you could break it up into 20 or so discreet elements that would be easy to create.
Depending on what the survey is for, a couple hi-res photos shot from known points or with well defined common points could be used to generate a well scaled representation of the facade.
The building was probable built from line work drawings, there is no reason we couldn't duplicate them.

Phil, the main issue I see with trying to recreate something like the original drawings is twofold.
First, it will take a lot of time. That's a serious amount of drafting.
Second, it will make determining real world positions of any features of the facade quite annoying as you'll need to crunch through the various plans to figure out what's what.
