In Florida. ?ÿTwo locations along US 19/ US 98. ?ÿFirst sighting was at Fanning Springs. ?ÿNext was a short distance south of Perry. ?ÿDewberry was the company name on one pickup. ?ÿBoth sites were on the highway, it appeared.

During the path between Tallahassee and Pensacola on I-10 we saw far too many trees and signs that had met the wrath of Hurricane Michael. ?ÿHad seen a much milder version of he same thing east of Leesburg, GA three days earlier. ?ÿWow! ?ÿI will stick with our tornados.

When already driving 10 to 15 mph over the posted speed limit, trying to aim a photo-taking device at anything could be overly hazardous.

Maybe I'll try that on Thanksgiving Day as we roar across Arkysaw from south to north.

Today's only sighting of survey activity was in Louisiana on I-20 a couple miles east of Grambling. ?ÿWe were in five states and saw only the one survey setup.

This is something that would require very local knowledge.

On our trek back from Florida we spent a night in Texarkana then headed north via Mena, Fort Smith and Fayetteville. ?ÿI had a recommended route that was computer generated and claiming to be the best route. ?ÿThe main route would have you entering Mansfield from the east then turning north to go through Witcherville. ?ÿBut, my instructions told me to turn north a few miles east of Mansfield on Route 39, pass through Dayton then continue to Witcherville. ?ÿThis stretch is a two-lane paved road with more twists than a typical Kentucky county road and a maximum speed in numerous places of 30MPH. ?ÿOur initial guess was that the genius coder who created the driving instructions must have been a native of itty-bitty Dayton.

This is something that would require very local knowledge...

I have none of that, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn once.

I did however dig up an old county map (circa 1887)?ÿof Sebastian County that might lend some clues:

It seems as though the straight route (US 71) is a new-fangled invention (after the invention of the horseless carriage).?ÿ In times past one had to take the route you took if you wanted to get "from here to there".?ÿ A cursory review of the topography on GE indicates the only bridge across Prairie Creek was probably the one south of Dayton.?ÿ I also saw a map that called your wayward route "Old Dayton Road".

As to why your "computer generated"?ÿdirections routed you on a 150 year old buggy trail and not?ÿthe?ÿFederal Highway route is anybody's guess.?ÿ Silly me, I keep a Road Atlas behind the seat.?ÿ?ÿ

Perhaps the computer had been told of a traffic accident or other slowdown on the 4-lane and computed that the 2-lane would be faster?

?ÿ Silly me, I keep a Road Atlas behind the seat.?ÿ?ÿ

An older relative of mine (probably older than you), who's navigated and is still navigating here, there and everywhere using road Atlas, appears to be able to beat sat-nav, both in accuracy to destination and time/best-route, including dodging traffic events and road works. Both methods though can't beat "there's a parking space", when you've just driven past it.

The computer-generated plan was printed off about one week ahead of our arrival. ?ÿI was hoping someone sort of local might be able to explain some plausible excuse to avoid going into Mansfield, such as major construction. ?ÿThere was almost no other traffic on this little detour and no signage suggesting temporary higher-than-normal use.
