I purchased a new Dell Precision Laptop. Never thought that the machine does not include a Serial Port. I use Carlson SurvCE with Carlson Explorer Data Controllers and the Explorers do not have USB Ports. How do I send and receive data, or can it be done?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The usb/serial converters work great. Just be sure to get a good one, as I bought a cheap one and it didn't work with my Windows 7 computer. Picked one up at Best Buy, I think, and it works fine.

I own a few of these. They work great! I Use them to download DC's, GPS receivers, comm for plotter, etc. The driver creates a "virtual serial port" and you need to be aware which comm port it has been assigned to.
Good stuff! Wouldn't be able to operate with out them.
Hey Chris, I think it was Radio Shack
You could probably just add a serial port card too, assuming you have any open slots? For a desktop, might actually be the best solution, laptop users don't have that option.
EDIT, I see it is a laptop, so never mind!
Here is what I use on my laptop Laptop Card
SHG
get a serial to USB converter.
Hint-only use one USB port for it so choose wisely. If you plug it into another USB port it may reinstall and assign a different COM number.
You may need to use the Windows XP emulator to get certain devices to work.
Thanks Phillip
I made a printout. Could be a big help.

I had that problem, but I found a USB/serial adapter from CompUSA that splices into two serial ports.
