Deadwood BM 6193 (ca. 1898)

This is one of the iron post/brass cap bench marks that we found in the Black Hills. I really wanted to find the bearing trees, but it appears the fire got them. I show a picture of the stump with an indentation and some sap coming out. I would appreciate some thoughts about this from those of you who work in forested areas. This is out of my treeless Nebraska realm of expertise.

Jerry, no dendrologist here, but would the sap still be bleeding from an unhealed wound 20 years later?
