My TSC1 with firmware 1.4.3 and survey controller 7.61 will no longer turn on. I've tried a new battery. It was working fine a week ago.
Anybody have any ideas on things to try or a repair shop you would recommend?

I had the same problem with a recon, take the battery out of the TSC1 and charge the battery outside the TSC-1 overnight. After charging it this way, plug the battery back in, the TSC-1 should work.
From my understanding there were only a couple of companies that bought up the Trimble surplus and still do work on the older equipment. I've had pretty good luck with NEI(Navigation Electronics, Inc.) in Louisiana. I've had them do work on our 4000's. Send them an email and see if they can help.
I had one die about a month ago. Was sitting on my desk turned on. I went to use it and the screen was frozen. The only thing I was able to do was turn it off. OFF for good. It won't turn on soft or hard boot, dead as a door nail. I have a spare, I should say had a spare because when this one dies it's lights out or spend about $5000 for a new one.
Talked to a dealer about the TSC3. Looks like a very good unit but it won't run a 4700 receiver in RTK mode. It will start a 4700 base. Maybe Trimble will fix this issue or maybe not.
The TSC2 has been discontinued but they still have some inventory. They will give about a $1000 trade for an old controller even a dead TSC1. I just can't see myself buying a new discontinued piece of computer equipment.
I just hope to limp along until 2013 when I will about be forced to upgrade or go out of business. At that point my base radio will be illegal. Hopefully the LightSquared issue will be resolved. Hopefully the political problems will be on their way to being fixed BUT that is just wishful thinking. Maybe there won't be any business so no need for any new equipment.
OK, off the soapbox. Would appreciate likewise any ideas on how to turn my dead TSC1 on again. Maybe they all got hour meters that make em die at some witching hour. I really can't complain after twelve years service though, guess I thought it would last forever.
True
Thanks for the idea. I kinda think it won't help me though because I put the battery from my other TSC1 that is still working into it and it didn't power up.
Would have been a good shot though if I didn't have the second battery.

I hadn't located that firm in my internet search. Thanks, I'll give them a call.

I'm in the same boat as you but further along the retirement curve. The equipment I have has more than paid for itself and I'm trying to milk it along for just a little longer. Don't plan on any big expenditures.

If for some reason your TSC1 doesn't rise from the dead, you might take a look at what's available on eBay. Most of the units with Asset Surveyor go for around $300. Those with Survey Controller, around $500, I think. I don't know whether it is feasible to think about installing your licensed copy of Survey Controller in another TSC1 or not, but if so the Asset Surveyor units are plentiful.
TDS software licenses are tied to a specific piece of hardware and cannot be transferred. Once the hardware is dead the license is dead also.
Yes it sounds like a stupid policy but TDS has always operated that way.
How many do you need and how soon do you need them?
I have a few Trimble TSC1s with Survey Controller Ver 7.72 software that I plan to start selling on eBay, maybe as soon as this week. I can install an older software version if that is your preference.
These have all been checked out and are working fine now, but one must remember that the TSC1s are getting old (discontinued in 2002) and brittle like me.

I was having a problem with my TSC1, where the round multiple direction arrow key at the top of the keyboard was failing to correctly navigate amongst the menu options. I ended up taking the handheld apart, and found that the contacts had gummed up between the round pad and the underlying contacts. I ended up scraping off the contacts, removing the gummy rubber like deposits with a knife, and reassembled. Back to full function. I was pleased. However, this is probably a bit off topic, though, because in my case the unit did turn on and initialize. good luck.
