I have used a 48 for some years now and have gotten kind of attached. My Elem Surveying class has me switching back and forth constantly! Is there any hotkeys or menus to do this conversion? I have not found it yet, but maybe I need a survey card. Would appreciate any advice! -Thanks

You are not alone...I got it engraved on my 48! Couldn't never remember from one time to another the path to key in when I needed that function.

It's a good calculator, 13 years and still working great.

g'day mate, 17 year user here.

you can do even better than remember the keystrokes to get to the time menu. you can assign common commands to the custom menu; [CST] on your keyboard. You won't have to remember any menu structures as you can assign up to 6 commands that will appear above the keys 'A' to 'F' when you press the [CST] key. I would suggest you put HMS+ HMS- HMS-> and ->HMS in the custom menu.

1. Go to the time menu as previously shown:

[4][NXT]
2. Press in this order:

[+][C][D][E][F][ENTER]
-You should now have a list that should look like { ->HMS HMS-> HMS+ HMS- }
3. Now you need to store this as your custom list. Press ['][alpha][alpha][C][SIN][COS][ENTER][STO]

step 3 should have put 'CST' on the stack and pressing [STO] has stored your list as the reserved variable CST. Now whatever menu you find yourself in you can press [CST] and the menu keys above [A] to [D] will be your favourite angle operators. they will remain this way until you open another menu but will return any time you press [CST].

Good luck.

p.s. the default for alpha lock is 2 presses of the [alpha] key. if yours is on single alpha then step 3 will only require [alpha] instead of [alpha][alpha]. you can test it by pressing the [alpha] key twice, now. if the alpha symbol still persists after 2 presses then follow the instructions as written. if it appears then disappears after the second press then just use 1 [alpha].

Had To Do That With My First HP 35 And The HP 25

A pain, but neccessary at the time.

Now get with the program and repeat after me:

"RPN", "RPN", "RPN", "RPN".

LOL

I love RPN, my son hates it.

On a 41 it's on the keyboard.

Write it down somewhere, because you'll be entering it in over and over and over....

You can also assign functions to "user" keys, like you could with the hp41. (when you're in "user" mode, the key does the function (HMS for example) when you push that key) The problem might be that a software you use assigns different functions to certain keys. I don't use any commercial softwares and don't have that problem.

I like hiving HMS+ and HMS- assigned to shift-plus and ship-minus for instance. However, once you know how to navigate to these it's pretty easy. I like the "cst" idea also.

hey adamsurveyor, you are of course correct about user mode. i suggested CST because is a dedicated key accessible without shifting, and NOBODY that i know of uses it so it should be good to use full time, and it doesn't interfere with the normal functioning of the keypad like user mode does, potentially avoiding an inadvertent HMS+ instead of regular +. but for experienced users the USR or even 1USR modes can be very convenient.

also a little tip for everybody who fumbles and rushes to change batteries before the calculator exhausts it's power capacitor to keep the memory alive for the 30 or so seconds that it is alleged to last before memory loss. you can put the calculator into a 'sleep mode' whereby the calculator apparently can keep it's memory for a day or more without batteries. this will give you as much time as you need to change batteries quite casually. in this mode the clock and alarm functions are not powered so you will have to reset your clock and alarms (i also don't know anybody who uses these anymore either). potentially you could extend battery life by sleeping the calculator when not in use instead of just turning it off.

to sleep the calculator: press and hold [ON], press and hold [SPC], release [ON] and [SPC]. the calculator will turn off with a beep.
