We are looking to upgrade our conventional data collectors and software: We are currently running Allegro Data collectors with Carslon SurvCE software. We have 2 setups, each running a Sokkia SRX robotic instrument. While we have very few complaints with our current setup, we realize the collectors are dated. Part of me just wants to upgrade to the ‘newer’ Carlson Surveyor Plus data collectors while still using the Carlson SurvCE software. This, of course, would allow for a seamless integration of our workflow.

Can anyone recommend a better data collection/software combo that would work with our Sokkia SRXs? We do a variety of work, but mostly topographic work and construction staking

Look at the Carlson Supervisor data collector. Quite a nice tool. Either way, you are running one of the best systems that there is right now. Why change?
We run Carlson Field on Panasonic Tougbooks doing the same work you mention with no problems.
When you are driving a Cadillac there's no need to trade it in for a Isetta.

I do have Carlson Field on Getac V200 but my problem is the size/weight. I wonder how do you manage carrying around in the field your toughbook. Can you share some pictures? Thank you.

The Surveyor Plus in my opinion is the best DC ever. I think you can just transfer your existing software license from the Allegro to the Surveyor Plus cutting the cost way down.

I thought 1 was at the bottom left of everything, except phones and some data collectors? YES WHY?

I recall hearing that when push button telephones were introduced, the numbering was reversed from 1 at lower left to 1 at upper left so accountants and others used to firing data into an adding machine would not enter phone numbers faster than the system could handle it. Could be true; could be an urban myth, but it sounds reasonable.

Our field crews have fabricated mounts on the total station tripods to hold the Toughbooks. Don't have any pictures to show.
Some of the crew chiefs operate the data collector and monitor the graphic display to insure the shots are showing up correctly. Between setups some go and draw in the utility lines and label them.
So far we have not had many complaints about the Toughbooks. They run much cooler than the systems we used before and they handlew the heat and humidity in Mississippi fine, so far.
Each party chief has worked out his/her own way to handle the data collectors that suits their needs and all seem happy with the system. As long as they code the shots correctly I leave the other details to them. 🙂

Carlson Supervisor Platform

The hardware Carlson Supervisor uses is actually an Algiz 7 from Handheld.

You can buy the same hardware from Carlson, MicroSurvey, Leica, etc. just pointing out that it isn't unique to Carlson and if you like the hardware BUT want to run different software you do have that option.

Carlson Supervisor Platform

The Carlson Supervisor and the Carlson Supervisor+ GPS Tablet have been developed by Carlson Software to complement its comprehensive line of land development and mining software.

Both feature:

Microsoft Windows 7.0 Ultimate operating system
Intel ultra-low-power yet super-fast 1.6GHz processor
A massive 64GB solid-state hard drive
A 7-inch widescreen, 1024x600 resolution, sunlight-readable, resistive touchscreen
The Carlson Supervisor has been field proven for more than 15 months and works on more total stations, robots and GPS systems than any other solution.

The Carlson Supervisor and the Super G can both be used with Carlson SurvPC, Carlson's popular SurvCE data collection software, enhanced and produced to work on a PC, and with Carlson Grade Supervisor, and easy-to-use software made for construction grade management.

Carlson Supervisor Platform

I was talking about the hardware, it appears that is off the shelf hardware available from many vendors, I see the same field computer at these links:

Manufacturer

MicroSurvey

Leica CS25

My point is, if you like the platform the Carlson Supervisor is built upon i.e.: a WIN7 field rugged tablet, you can run Carlson or another solution on that same platform, including Field Genius from MicroSurvey which is pretty much a direct competitor.

You are lucky that you have a choice of what you use to collect your data. In Florida if you work for DOT you HAVE to use their program, EFB, to collect your survey data. They have only recently replaced the DOS version with a Windows desktop, Windows Mobile version. Buggy as hell. Crashes, lock ups and on occasion, it trashes its own data file rendering your work useless.

And all the while, TDS and Carlson work just great but we can't use either of them...
