NC is all over the place.?ÿ Many counties are fully online, others will be scanned back to the 1970s.?ÿ I've long known that a little bit of power can be a dangerous thing for a given person, but some of the registrars take it too far.?ÿ One county has "Deed Books" until the election of a new registrar in the 1980s who evidently didn't like the existing filing system and started her own "Book of Records".?ÿ What makes it real nice is that there is a large book and page overlap.?ÿ If you are pulling a record labeled Book 315 Page 85 it could be either in the Record Books?ÿ or the Deed Books.?ÿ This makes it easy for drafters to mislabel deed references and is just plain annoying.?ÿ IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT!

Yes up here in Dade County you can't take a cell phone in the courthouse. It ticks me off because I could just take pictures of my research. I need to talk to the judge about getting that changed. Years ago I used to go into the Hillsborough County Courthouse about every other day. For I year I would pull out my pocket knife and put it in the change basket before going through the metal detectors. No one ever said anything to me. Then One day they got all upset I was bringing in a pocket knife. I told them I had been doing it for a year and I guess they were embarrassed that they let me get away with it and just told me to not to do it again.

Some (most?) of the Iowa county recorders as of a few years ago prohibit cameras in their records area, and I suppose cell phones for that reason.?ÿ I think the official reason is that some older records have social security numbers that they need to redact when they make copies.?ÿ Another reason may be revenue enhancement from the copy charge, although that cost isn't out of line.?ÿ

I don't see why the whole courthouse should be off-limits to cameras or phones.

Fortunately, there is a state-wide on-line free service that has the documents from last decade or two.

Dade County...so that's where you're at! You can keep that Billy goat country. Done one job there and won't do another.
