I have the copies of notes for the survey of the Townsite of D'Aste in 1917.

In 1918, The GLO did a resurvey....

but wait... there's more....
page 2

and finally....

basically the digital equivalent of Charlie Brown's teacher....

It looks like they removed and reset some of the block intersection corners...
I'm trying to get ahold of Billings to see if I can get better images.....

Interestingly enough, I have found that using a yellow highlighter in the hard to read areas helps tremendously. Opening the files in an image editor and adjusting the contrast may also help.

In the example below, I turned the brightness all the way down (-150 in Photoshop) and the contrast all the way up (100). Of course, if you do this to the original image at full size, it will probably come out even better.

That is a good trick.

I have used it on some blueline copies that were really dark. Some of the platted calls can be impossible to read. If you switch the dark and light around, sometimes the calls become more legible.

You probably got them from the same place I got this one.

I asked for a hard copy and they sent a print that looked exactly like the scanned one. You might try to just have one of them sit down and read it to you. I've done that in the past and it worked pretty well.

Love your way of thinkin'...............

"basically the digital equivalent of Charlie Brown's teacher...."

Those of us who have seen every Charlie Brown special about a thousand times can relate to your comment. I'm getting more and more that way with any female voice.

I've used the "solarize" setting on my cell phone camera
and gotten some readable information off of paper copies...

Never tried it on a digital copy though!

Hmmmmmm

I found some boat spikes out there a few years back, just for fun, no survey involved. Seek and ye shall find! Especially around the old church.

Could use a bit of help here...edit

yes, I have done that and then convert to black/whiter and then invert the image to a negative where the text wil be white with black ground. The white terxt makes it more legible for some reason.
what rankin has is really pushing the limits of what one can do.
The GLO notes online from the state land office here are sometimes wanting ..so to speak

edit... big drawback.... of course if you print a copy like this, be prepared to use a lot of ink.

The boatspikes are probably the 3/8" spike called for in the the plat and barely legible on the last sheet I posted.

The admin in Billings said she'd look into getting some better scans, but that I might have to call Denver.

To others- the the contrasting tricks look like they may help some- in fact the first image i posted is actually easier to read than the original that I openned up and snipped from.... I'll experiment with some different image viewers. I think my default is the microsoft whatever that comes with win7.... don't have a lot of options with this last load.... they didn't even give us irfan view back...
