We have a CORS network here in Tasmania but it is very difficult to check the status of the base stations. It can be done by logging into each one individually but that gets very tiresome.

With the CORS networks elsewhere how are users informed of outages in the networks?

Do you get automated emails or manually sent emails?

Is there a website you can visit to see the status of the base stations in your network? If so can you list the site please?

I would like to go to the operator of my network with options on how to improve their service rather than just complaining. I'm hoping that by suggesting a variety of websites or email methods they will pick one and keep the end users better informed.

Thanks.

My experience is that each entity is a bit different. The Iowa RTN for example will email each registered user when the network is experiencing issues or there is a planned outage/upgrade or other changes that the user should know about upfront.

Leica SmartNet service is a bit different as you can follow them on Twitter and note local outages/issues that are specific to a single reference station or smaller area. If it is a planned outage/upgrade or large scale issue, they then email each registered user in the area.

A lot of networks also provide a real-time map that will indicate reference stations that are online/offline.

Here at LSU in Louisiana, our Trimble RTN will automatically send out tweets when there's a hiccup, but only about 15% to 20% of our subscribers volunteer to receive the tweets.

Yesterday we had a hiccup, and we got a LOT of phone calls ...

Yes, some networks are better than others... I'm suppressed at how poor of a finished product is supplied to some organizations from major market vendors for the price charged!

Send me an email and I can work with you (and your network owner) on upgrading their system for better accuracy, automated network notifications, and real-time network status pages.

Believe you may find information at http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/Engineering/CaddMapping/Survey/Pages/default.aspx helpful. Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has nearly a decade of experience operating CORS and Virtual Reference System (VRS). The page also includes a link to a 1994 Professional Surveyor Magazine article about the system.
