I sell Rotary tickets for similar cost !!

How does one start the survey chariot for that price ?

http://www.gothenburgtimes.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=3006:city-to-discontinue-locating-property-stakes&catid=1:local&Itemid=2

Someone who does not practice in this area needs to do more public awareness and write a letter to council and the press IMVHO !

Cheers,

Derek

PS-

Rent-a-Locator ??

How about Rent-a-Professional at a professional rate ?

@ $150/corner is $600 for a lot survey (4 corner minimum in the fine print). hmmmm

What I find amazing is that any city in the US would provide such a service in the first place. I bet the private sector is glad to see this go away.

Well it costs $75 minimum to get the washing machine repairman out for a service call but what makes the Surveyor think he can charge twice that much??? 😉

If the general public believes we provide the same service as a building inspector with a metal detector, than yes, charging $150 (gasp) for pipe locating is absurd. I wish SOMEONE in the story would have brought out the fact that an iron pipe doesn't automatically mean property corner.
Do we pay the accountant because of the knowledge and experience he possesses, or because he knows how to operate a calculator?

Its kinda like a joke that you have to explain.....it is either funny or it is not, it is either important to someone or not, dont lose any sleep over it, don't waste your time.

An accountant takes care of peoples money, that needs no explaination because everybody understands the importance of money, therefore it is deemed important automatically.

An doctor takes care of peoples health, that needs no explaination because everybody understands the importance of health, therefore it is deemed important automatically.

Surveying is usually a means to an end and its importance is determined by how quick, efficient, and cost effective you can help someone acheive their ends, this will be the limit of your importance as a surveyor to the general public, get over it.

if a town/city council wants to offer such a service to its citizens, for that price (or any price, or for free), I do not see much of an issue. It's just another service offered, just like garbage pick-up or water delivery.

The issue is having a license surveyor to supervise the job.

As for the private industry price, well, it's private industry, they'll charge what they want. And what do we know about this town? Small town, survey outfit with a permanent RTK GPS base running on top of the office, knowledge of condition of survey fabric, I can see that price. Besides the company could possibly use this service to gain clients and keep trucks visible.

Do you know how many $20 stakes you have to locate to be able to afford $4/gallon gas, and the $500 schoenstedt?

Do you know how many $20 stakes you have to locate to be able to afford a 4 year degree in surveying, $4/gallon gas, and a $500 schoenstedt?

Cut out the middleman, work for the government, they'll buy the $4/gallon gas and the locator and let you use it while offering health care benefits and a retirement plan... 🙂

The population is around 3600 in Gothenburg and about 24,000 for the entire county. Located in a very rural section of Nebraska along I-80.

Well, you can laugh at $75-$150, but their price was held down by the unlicensed "competition" charging $20. Now that this burden has been removed, I'd imagine the price will go up.
