I'm from NY and use Verizon wireless. On the road this summer working. I'm in California this week. Just got word that I'll be working in Ontario Canada, mid July.

What would be best, no contract, one month cell service with data, voice text plan in that area? I need about 1Gb data plan.

I have a plan with T Mobile just a normal plan that includes Mexico and Canada, I went to Montreal, I had no problems, and did not have to do anything with my phone before I left.

Most Verizon phones now have a SIM card in them for international use. I travel internationally off and on and do not have an issue using my Verizon phone outside of the US. You can call Verizon and they can give you short term voice and data options.

I am a T-Mobile user, no issues in Canada, BUT I would check with whatever carrier you do use as both AT&T and Verizon were NOT as Canadian friendly at least as of 2015 which was last time I was there, huge fees in Canada with a USA based phone. You may actually be better off getting a Canadian SIM or a Canadian based burner phone from the likes of Rogers for the month.

I would get a T-mobile phone in the US before you leave, or get a prepaid Telus phone in Canada. Telus has the best coverage in rural areas and verizion, att and sprint charge ridiculous fees for international use.

I called Verizon. They have new plan called TravelPass, unlimited call, text and data just $5 for a 24 hour session.

how it works:

  • Use domestic allowances (talk, text & data) while traveling outside the United States.
  • Enjoy low daily rates of $5/day in Mexico and Canada, and $10/day in more than 120 other countries.
  • Your 24-hour session starts after your first call, sent text, or data usage.

That might be a good deal if you are only there for a couple of days, but if there for longer I would switch you number to T-mobil before you go because you get free unlimited calling, texting and data.

A few years ago President's Choice was selling a pre paid plan that ran on the Telus network that allowed free calls to the US. It was a good deal.
