I'm on the county planning commission. We had a plat amendment on the agenda this month because a cabin was over the lot line. When asked how it came about, the answer from the lot owners was "it's because of the satellites." I've heard this one before.
The one owner said he'd been in the subdivision from the beginning. Apparently the surveys being done today, by the satellites, don't match up with the original marking done by the developer. Since the satellite survey must be right all of the lots are being shifted to make the correction. I just bit my tongue as their problem was being solved, not how I think it should be but how it usually is, an independent resurvey. These satellites are some powerful medicine and most folks accept what they say.

Really? Someone in authority is doing such a thing? I feel your pain:-X
Surveyors are licensed in Utah, that must be the authority. Somebody had a survey done and now there is a problem. These old mountain subdivisions are not without problems and were done as cheaply as possible (way before GPS satellites), but I've been into enough of them that I know if you dig deep enough and ask enough questions you usually can figure out how the lots were originally marked out, which won't align perfectly with the monument free record. But hey, what gives me the authority to violate the record, I'm usually the odd man out? Independent resurveys via satellites are immensely easier (and cheaper) to do than finding the original uncalled for monuments. I suppose if landowners accept them why should I whine about it.
Maybe I should start using "the satellites" as the reason my survey differs from the last one. I get asked about it all the time, how easy it is to use the satellites and their superior accuracy. Even when I try to explain that its just a measuring tool I get the felling they don't believe me. The public has been sold a bill of goods with regards to what the satellites do.
Yep, the famous "Garfunkel Subdivision" may have been fiction, but it really isn't that rare or that far from reality is it??
