We are looking into upgrading everything. My question is do Carlson points play nice with Civil 3D 2014? We have always had issues with Carlson points and LDD and we are just wondering if this has been resolved.
Survey uses Carlson and Engineering uses Civil 3D.
We find just exporting the points from Carlson to a csv file then import into Civil 3D is the simply way. We normally delete all points from the drawing before sending it out.
Our parent company uses Civil3D and we use Carlson Survey and we have had no problems at all. We export the .crd file out using the "export points" option on the points pull down to a .txt file and send that with our drawings.
Our parent company got spoiled because we used to send them the entire project folder when we used LDD. They opened it and went to work. They can still do that, but as with any drawings made to a .dwg file (Microstation, etc.) they have to recreate some data, like surfaces, but with most software today that is the norm and not all that difficult.
The cost savings of running Carlson Survey in our office FAR outweighs any time they spend recreating the data they need.
This process is pretty much the norm when you have 3rd party vendors using all of the different software packages available out there. It's no just a Carlson thing.
We have been running Carlson Survey for 6 years now and have not had one drawing returned by any client nor have any of them reported any problem in opening and using our drawings.

IMHO, consider using the 3rd party software "upgrade" monies to educate Survey in C3D.

Why not create the data they need? I mean, do your work in Carlson, then, at delivery, create the C3d files the engineers need? Do what they have been doing for them. Personally, I like to retain as much control over what happens to my data as I can.

For surfaces from Carlson, just export the tin as a LandXML and let the engineer import that back into C3D.

LandXML is a good option, but it is not 100% reliable. There will occasionally be differences.
