They are putting on the finishing touches to a road job we started three years ago. It was a pretty big job for this small firm, but it looks really good. Until we saw the footprints and bicycle tire tracks in the brand new sidewalk at the entrance. I'll never understand why...

I had a helper who would always ask the finishing guys, "When can I write my name in it?"

Somewhere in Knoxville there is a footer that has been properly marked. It was a hot summer afternoon and the builder was pouring foundations on three adjacent lots and the concrete was curing about as quick as they could get it out of the truck. The plan was for me to start on the first foundation and last one should be hard enough to work with by the time I got to it. I knocked out the first two and went to check on the third. Most of it was ready but this one section was still real soft. I nailed all that I could and took a 30 minute break. As dark was approaching, I checked again and the problem section was still too soft. Normally I'd just straddle the footing and keep the weight off the rod tip to prevent it from sinking, then mark the point with a traverse nail with a washer to help support the rod for the check shot. In this case, the problem section was the low point of the foundation with a 4 foot bulkhead on each end. I ended up using a couple of heavy duty lids from the storage boxes on my truck to spread my weight (think snow shoes for concrete) then nailed the point with a traverse nail and washer. I set the rod and dc up top, pulled the lids out of the concrete, and I was balancing on the little bit of solid ground at the sides of the footing. I grabbed the sides of the bulkhead and started pulling myself up to the main level of the foundation. Just as I almost got my knee on the upper footing, the bulkhead let loose and I rode it down like a falling ladder, landing on my butt in the middle of the footing. I'm told that the masons had lots of questions about the strange dent in the footing the next morning.

Footprints, initials, names, and monkey faces are all amateur moves...........Leave an imprint of your entire backside if you really want to step up your game.:D
