Cutsup

Wearing a hat in the house was not happening. My dad would smack it off and my mom would ask me if I was a cutsup. I don't know what that is but it must be a dumb kid wearing a hat in the house.

I still don't wear a hat in the house. I do at the office when it's cold, though.

That's a lot of hats

:good:
I find myself wearing a lot of different hats in the same day, too.

for hot weather I use a boonie hat, I added Velcro to the front brim to hold it up while looking through the eyepiece. I use an SPF 50 spray before putting on the hat and re-apply every 2 hours. I personally know a old timer survey tech who lost the tops to both ears to skin cancer, he blames it on wearing baseball hats for 20+years of field work.

Paden

Most of the caps and hats I've seen people wearing over the last few years can stay on their head for all I care. I don't want them setting them down and fouling up anything I own. As for other places indoors, most folks used to have a hat tree to put it on. Put one on a hat tree in a public place that's worth anything and it will probably be gone when you come back to get it. I agree that I don't like folks wearing hats or caps indoors either, but there are definitely worse things they could be doing.

I usually use a bandana draped around the back and both sides of my head. hold the corners together on my forehead with one finger while I put my cap or hardhat on. On really hot days I wet the bandana first.

That is what I call a "task specific" hat.

I use a Sun Runner cap from Outdoor Research. Its really light and I sprinkle water on it when its really hot out. When in a canoe, I have the sides attached. When surveying the sides are off, but not far away, and the ears and temples are covered with 50 sunscreen.

Wow, I am surprised that no one has mentioned Tilley Hats yet!

They are the best on the market. Lifetime warranty and they look GOOD!

http://www.tilley.com/us_en/

The website mentions that people will come out of nowhere and compliment you on your hat. It does happen. I have had one for 14 years and more times than I can remember, people have come up to me just to discuss my hat. I have several styles now, based on the situation (summer, winter, fall, work hat vs leisure hat).

The only downfall is that they are made in Canada. I prefer things made in the US, but that is just me.

I used to wear only straw and felt, but when my kids were little, they would sit on my hats and crush them. With the Tilley hat, not a problem. If they get dirty, throw them in the washer (I also recommend washing them every few weeks of heavy sweating). They also have brims that are soft enough not to knock the instrument, but stiff enough to give you shade and protection for the random twigs that swing in your face as your walking through the bush.

I highly recommend giving them a try.

I like the Henschel Aussie Breezers.

Wide brim mesh hats

I use the 4" 5301. It keeps the sun off your head very well and somewhat lets your head cool. I have hair and so don't get sunburned through the mesh.

Several styles to choose from and Made in America.
