Our latest trip to the Black Hills to search out historic survey monuments brought along a new face this year when Dave Ingram joined Kurt Luebke and I for three days of hiking and driving through parts of western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming. Dave got a good introduction to the PLSS with some weird and intriguing situations. He also showed his moxie by climbing to the top of Crow Peak and on the last day making his way up a seemingly near vertical wall that was 200' high to get to an 1897 USGS township corner. Highlights of the trip were finding an 1898 USGS copper bolt bench mark in a field with no remaining references to go by, 1904 state line monument, monuments established along the Wind Cave boundary in 1906, a USC&GS and SS monument on top of Battle Mountain, and some very cool bearing trees! The scenery was outstanding and the weather was perfect.
Title the first picture "Six surveyors and another guy."
My mind is playing tricks on me today. I could have sworn the title of this thread mentioned 'bootleggers'.
What really stood out to me was the Good Life Brewing Company, Bend Oregon tee shirt. Made a good post even better.
Are there TWO fellers named Penry in that last picture?
That looks to have been a great experience in some of the remaining wilds of America. :good:
What's the story on the 7th photo- RM 331' and the arrow?

My daughter lives in Bend. I will be visiting her in a couple weeks. Great town for beer, hiking, beauty and beer!

Just a cool old GLO RM monument that we happened by. It seems to have been vandalized in the late 80's. :-/
Vandalized? That's being generous...
If you think you'll have time for a beer Kurt, shoot me an email to let me know when you'll be in the neighborhood. I'll buy rounds 1 &2.
