Does anyone here have any idea if there is a required height for a safety flag on an ATV or UTV? I have worked on several jobs that require the flag but nobody seems to know of a height requirement.
Thanks,
James
SAFETY FLAGS ARE REQUIRED ON ALL VEHICLES IN THE IMPERIAL SAND DUNES RECREATION AREA (This includes two-wheeled motorcycles.) All vehicles shall be equipped with a whip mast and a 6x12 inch red/orange flag. Flags may be of pennant, triangle, square, or rectangular shape. Masts must be securely mounted on the vehicle and extend 8 feet from the ground to the mast tip. Safety flags must be attached within 10 inches of the tip of the whip mast with club or other flags mounted below safety flag or on another whip.
I found this, and it says that is for safety on federal lands. Didnt find anything OSHA specific. I can ask our safety guy when he gets back in.
So far I have found 9 ft and 10 ft but it was for off-road parks and not OSHA or MSHA.
Thanks,
James
A good rule to follow is the height of the flag should reach the middle of the mirror of the highest piece of haulage equipment running on site.
Once you figure it out...the higher the better. Around here they sell a flag called "Rip-Rod". They are by far the most durable.
I bought mine at an ATV shop. JRL
I have come to the conclusion that there is no official (OSHA/MSHA) requirement, only what is required on the particular job. The requirement for a flag height at the middle of the mirror of the highest piece of equipment that David mentioned has popped up several times. That makes sense but doesn't apply to my current situation since I am the only person working in the area. The dirt crew can't work until I get finished. I found several requirements for recreational use that vary by State or Off-Road Park.
Thanks for the input.
