Found just inside a storage building. No lid on the manhole but someone thought enough to put some road steel over it. Anyone have a clue?

Sewage grinder pump, looks like an older Zoeller or Liberty model.

Back in the days when every automotive engine had a fan on the front of it my wife learned the equivalent of why a grinder is needed ahead of a pump in a pressure sewer line.?ÿ Auto fans are great for moving air from one side of the fan blades to the other side.?ÿ They don't work with a hoot at moving a tom cat in similar fashion.

It works best if the material reaching the pump is of a size to be effectively pumped and not completely clog and/or destroy it.?ÿ Adult diapers being one of the most common items needing destroying prior to reaching the impeller of the pump in a sewer system.

@holy-cow

My brother and I once had the "pleasure" of cleaning up a neighbor's cat out of the fan shroud on a '58 Chevy one cold morning.?ÿ And this was in the days before there was a car-wash on every corner.?ÿ

I don't know if I'd use the word grind however...hack might be a better choice.?ÿ
