There are 13 things that can cause it.

Firmware updates, are not up to date. (Go to mfr web site, and get them, and install them)

Connection wire, is failing. (for the ones with separate Antennae, and GPS reciever) Jiggle wires, and if they come in, then replace and or clean connections, with ZRC (Zero Residue Cleaner, for Electronics)

Failed download of ephemeris. Perform a reset on the reciever.

Solar flares can do alot. Recently we have had them going on. (The extra noise makes if foul up the ephemeris update and keep current process) Solve this, by running EARLY and LATE and seeing if it improves. GPS works usually better AFTER dark. No solar radiation.

IF it was built by a man, it can be understood by a man, and fixed.

Here's why I asked. We have a permanent base set up on a job site. Worked fine yesterday. The guys turned it on today, no signal. I had replaced the antenna a few weeks ago, as it had been on the pole for over a year and it somehow got water in it. I took that one into the office, took it apart, dried it out, then it worked. So I took it to the site this morning, and using a different cable, hooked it up, still no GPS. Got out one of my rovers, it wasn't picking up anything. Called support, and while I was talking to them, the base started working. Switched it back to the original base and it worked. But it satellites kept going off and on, from 2-5, until it finally started picking up 8-9. I have no idea why.

my guys had issues and i reset the units to factory defaults and made the standard changes necessary (multipath reduction, etc...)

even though they swear they did not do it, if you try to start base on the rover it can cause the units to get cranky.

On and off satellites is usually caused by a cable problem. If a jiggle makes a difference, then you know.

I did that a few days ago. I have two units and one is ALWAYS the base and the other is ALWAYS the rover. I mixed them up somehow and no clue how, took me over an hour to figure it out.
