Hi,
I will be upgrading from a juniper allegro with survce to a new device. Robot is a Sokkia SRX with rc4-unit.

I've already decided that it will be a juniper mesa 2 (cell-phone and dgps)

What i'm still considering is the software : survpc, magnet field or fieldgenius

I've heard that fieldgenius has the capability of drawing linework without coding : selectioning the line on the screen and tell it what to do.

I've had a demo of magnet field but the representative told me that it still needs linenumbers to draw lines instantly. He didn't know if you could select the line by clicking it and continu measuring.

Is the above possible with survpc? I do a lot of as-builts with complicated curb-structures

I also want top use the dgps feature on the tablet to replace the rc4-unit. I know magnet field can work like this but how about the other 2 softwares?

Do other users of a sokkia srx have connection and combability problems with the new versions of filedgenius and survpc?

Greetings,
Lieven

I have FG running my Nikon 821.
They don't support those models as in they don't get any Nikons to test.
That would be my concern particularly as its Robotic and Sokkia - may not get proper testing by them?. Definitely test before buy.

That said, for my use I much prefer it to SurvCe. I have both, latter for GPS work.
FG will work okay with inbuilt GPS and will swap between instruments seamlessly.
FG and linework is excellent IMO, and the lines can be clicked on and offsets to points easily seen on screen.
It's very good in that area.
Previous versions did suffer when points and lines were needing selection as lines took over making point selection hopeless unless the lines were frozen.
They've done some good work in that area and its now very good.

SurvCE has different way it handles points but both have advantages. Probably tipped SurvCe favour.

As mentioned I'd test and see what gives best for you.

With Magnet Field and the NMEA string in your SHC5000 you can run Hybrid Search which might replace your RCPR4 in time.

I run a Sokkia SRX3 with RC-PR3. I would be interested in comparing notes.

Before getting the SRX, I ran a Topcon GTS-225 for several years, and ran it with TDS SurveyPro on an HP calculator. It was a great setup. Because of my experience with this system, I opted to purchase the SRX system with a TDS Nomad running SurveyPro, an option that was available, but wasn't being promoted. I believe that Sokkia at that time had something of a partnership with Carlson, and most SRX setups went out the door with Carlson SurvCE.

Nevertheless, I had heard many good things about Carlson, and eventually made the move to Carlson desktop software, including SurvNET, and use both with good results today. Over time, I came to believe that if I migrated my field setup from TDS SurveyPro to SurvCE that I would have the benefit of having all my software (field and office) produced by the same company.

To answer the OP, I am now running my SRX with SurvCE, and I also have a license of SurvPC. The SRX connects to both in a very similar way. I don't know of any differences between the two softwares in terms of connecting the SRX. I have a Carlson Surveyor+ with SurvCE, and a Juniper Mesa with SurvCE, and finally a low end Windows 10 tablet with SurvPC. I see that the Mesa 2 runs Windows 10 directly, and I think this is a good choice. If I were going to upgrade to a new device, I think I'd want a Windows 10 device. Windows Mobile is dying or dead.

I have had some misgivings about my transition to Carlson thusfar. The SurvCE software does not seem to work as cleanly with my SRX as TDS Survey Pro did. I would be very interested to know whether you might be experiencing any of the same issues that I am.

As for automatic linework, I have not yet taken the time to learn the Field to Finish routines available in both SurvCE and SurvPC, but it is on my to-do list, as I believe this would be a significant time saver.

I would also consider loaning you my tablet with SurvPC, so that you can experiment and see if you like it.

Drop me a message with your contact info. I'd be glad to keep in touch.
