Hi all,
I have a general interest in the application of 3d scanning.
I was curious as to how these massive point clouds are used received by a client?
What are the applications of the data you receive from scanners?

Some of the scanning we do the client gets nothing more than a cad drawing, it is just a data collection tool to collect data that is sued to create linework and dtm. Other clients want just the cleaned and registered point cloud to do their own thing.

I have had a scanner since 2007. Back then, it was almost impossible to give the client a point cloud, they had no software to handle it. Now it is more common for them to be able to work with the point cloud. A common deliverable now is a .las file.

Hi. As the others have said. External drives, CAD drawings. Try and go binary as far as possible. Smaller and easier to use. I like .las .pod or. e57. I would stick to .las. Also depends on what was scanned. If its certainly only going to be a cloud then at least for terrestrial stuff I split it into either Architectural or Plant. Arch stuff I tend to filter/decimate at about 10-15mm spacing and on plant no filtering.

As for use : We have found that the actual point cloud doesnt really get used by the clients. The client is usually too overwhelmed and doesnt know what to do with the point cloud and we end up modeling it anyway so we just recommend that as a standard now. Some do still want the cloud but mostly as a QC for modeling accuracy.

Might be different elsewhere

Just my 2C

las. It depends who our client is. For some stuff we just clean it up. For other ones we model.
