My trimble rep told me that a TSC2 or TSC3 with the internal 2.4GHz radio will work only with an S-series instrument. Anyone know if this is true?

I have an old beat TSC2 with external radio (blue dot) and a 5600 with 2.4GHz radio. I'd like to upgrade to a TSC3 (or maybe newer TSC2) with the internal radio.. rep says it won't work and I'd need to buy a new instrument to work with that style of data collector/radio. I'm tired of lugging around the external batteries and having to charge those too every night.. but not enough to buy a new gun.

Anyone know if what he i telling me is true?

I know that the internal 2.4 radios will work on all S6s to date. I am not privy to the external radios. You used to be able to upgrade a TSC2 to to an internal radio, but they may have nixed that and declared EOL on the TSC2.

Now you have to by a TSC3 with one in it if you want that...just assuming the prior. However, they do have a proven track record of that. Take the HPB to TDL radio push. "Ran out of upgrade parts"... My a**

Thanks for the feedback. My goal is to use a new internal radio on the TSC3 to talk to a older 2.4GHz 5600.

He says it won't work, I'm wondering if someone knows a trick or has tried it.

I've heard it said that there is a long range bluetooth adapter set that can be attached to both the gun and collector. I have a servo 5600 not the robo so I haven't tried it. But others have reported good results. I think it was called a 'Pirani' or something. Just FYI.

That's a very interesting idea. I see this product has a maximum range of 1000 meters with added antenna:

It's certainly a lot cheaper than the Trimble branded solution at $115 each.

We use our TSC2 with our S8, but we have to hook it up with that old wire to that old radio unit to use the 5600. I would think that the rep is right. Our TSC2 with the radio will not talk directly with the 5600.

Yep that's the one I was thinking of. I would do it for sure, but without the robo it does no good.

Do a search in here and I'm sure it was chatted up pretty good. I also know there is some issue with licensing radios which is why they are narrow-banding everything too. Which makes bluetooth a lot more appealing. No license, yet...

Damn.

Thanks for the definitive answer, now I know I'm not just dealing with an over eager sales rep!

I've also heard it won't work with the 5600 or the Spectra Focus 10, but will work with an S Series or Spectra Focus 30.

That's correct. The radio works with the S6 and the S8. It does not work with the Focus 30 or the Trimble 5600. That being said, there are radio kits you can purchase from dealers to add to the Rangers to run these models.
