Where can a 13' folding level rod, the kind with wing nuts, be bought now days? Not the 6', not the 3 piece fiberglass rod. Not with a month long wait from Sweden. Thanks

I think you are looking for a Philadelphia Rod. Wooden - 2 piece - 13' long?
Doesn't fold (unless you get really mad about it slipping), but I think this is what you were trying to describe...

Sokkia makes a folding 9 1/2 foot rod, but I wouldn't use it for running level loops.

Wow. I must be really dating myself or maybe it was something that was only available in the PNW for about 20 years. They are or were made by Hultafors, are 13.13' long, in 3 sections with wing nuts, originally they had a white reflective face, the last ones we bought had a yellowish reflective face. The only place we can find them online now is in Vancouver BC and they don't ship international (so much for NAFTA).

No. It's not a linker rod and I saw the Sokkia and I would only use that to beat down stinging nettles.

I started my survey career in the Vancouver area and I know exactly what you are talking about. I, like you, recently tried to buy such a rod but was unable to find one.

That's the rod, and that's the company. I looked at the one I own, and see it came from Woods but I can't find them on the internet anywhere. Well, one of our surveyors is from White Rock so I guess it we get an order to them, he can pick up 5-6 at Christmas time. Next thing which will be hard to find is plumb bob string. I keep the 100' & 300' steel tape repair kit hidden because you can't buy them anymore.

I too, started my career in the Vancouver.I know the rod,and Cansel. I would suggest that you make sure you can get a rod in feet, and not just metric, that is, if you use Cansel.

As I recall they are metric on one side, imperial on the other. We used to read both sides at each turn instead of running loops.

Expensive at $265 CAN. Plus shipping. You can almost buy 3 fiberglass rods for that price.

Why do you need this exact rod? Just preference? I'm just curious if there's an advantage....

I'm also curious. Looks lighter than a wooden Philly rod....can't slip - it's either extended or not.

They are very compact when folded. That's the main thing. It is true that they can't slip but it is also true that they can scissor, so on balance that's a negative for them.
