I agree Kent. Lowest point on these 6 Ft. monuments would be the best position. There is also memorials from the 1873 original survey that the 1908 retracement doesn't mention that would answer some questions about subsidence. If I get the blessing/backing from the local chapters, I plan to plumb them up, reference them, and record CP+F's of the half-ass results I obtain. Presented project at Clearwater Chapter meeting but need some backing from WA since they own have of the monuments too!

should I have shot the dimple? The better question is

> Some say you can't touch it only locate it.

I heard the same thing and thought it would be smart to play it safe for now, pending further research of course.

Somebody should do somethin' before it subsides to its ultimate and inevitable death!

We as surveyors should be good stewards of our boundaries!

> an even longer topo shot on nothing....:-/

The Magspike has a dimple! Does that count?

My OPUS-RS solution was still on the Magspike, just not the dimple 😛

I lucked out this year! Only skins, no live ones. Have heard plenty of stories from locals though!

Neighbor just informed me he found a baby rattler in the bushes across the street yesterday. Suckers are movin' in!

As to the tilting monument. Until you get some clearance from the BLM guys I wouldn't have rehabed it either. Subsidence or other natural earth shifts require a geologist, which we are not. They can determine a lot more about soil and tectonic shifts then we can. Then you could make an informed decision. Hey it's already been there 105 years! Whats another month or two?

Besides, after comparing the photos it appears that the surrounding ground is actually substantially lower than when it was set. Which indicates it may have been graded or washed out. Either way the monument seems much taller in your recent photo.

At least you had some plumber manpower to help lay the 'pipe' just in case. 😉

Of course you can request that the BLM go and "fix" it up. Might take 10-20 years;-)
