Wildcard description match in survCE

Try using the / character instead of the * character. Also search Carlson Survey help for "point layer" and look for the section on special codes. Lots of goodies in there.

I use survCE but bring it into LDT, in LDT I would use cut* for my description key and it would bring any "cut" in with anything past "cut" in also, so a description of "cut 15.3" would come in and go on the cut layer just like a "cut 17.5". I would be interested to see how it is done in Carlson Survey myself as I am beginning to use it.

I've never been a fan of putting things on layers by description. The people that I have spoken with say they do it so that they can bring in only those points by turning on and off layers?
Well, I suppose that is one solution. A tad too cumbersome for me though. Using "Point Groups" is much faster and easier. (By the by, the asterix "*" symbol tells the software to select all points with the CUT description AND ANYTHING THAT FOLLOWS THOSE LETTERS. That's why you get it all.)
Using Point groups you can set up a group for each cut type. Then you can "draw/locate points" using "By Point Groups" to insert or erase the points as needed.
If you still prefer all those ding dang layers, then I an sure there is a way to do it, but I've always disliked getting a drawing from a contractor that has three or four hundred layers that appear useless to my needs. Thank the Good Lord for the "PURGE" command!!
