I found a strange phenomena on a DMA 1:100,000 quadrangle from South America.?ÿ
For scale, the rectangles are 1000 m UTM blocks, and the contour interval is 40 meters.?ÿ
Here is a portion of the legend, which indicates the symbol represents an earthen dam. But that does not make any sense where they are located, and note how it "offsets" the contours.?ÿ
Going to be in this area in November, and I will try to see what it actually is.?ÿ
?ÿ
those look significant... should show something on Google Earth I think.
Here is another area, after looking at GE I think it may be a sheer cliff (i.e. almost vertical)? But the legend says dam, not sure why that happened
strange indeed
ask the DMA, they should be able to explain if they are actually breakline anomalies...
parts look like cliff tops.
?ÿ
probably not political boundaries?ÿ
I thought that looked familiar.
Yup, vertical cliffs, I've seen them.?ÿ
I found?ÿ a few benchmarks for ya, too.....
Six of us will be doing the 4 day Inca trail hike, should be really cool. I have been there (Machu Picchu) before but did not do the hike.?ÿ
Should be a good time, four of us are going to Vina del Mar Chile for a few days afterwards for R&R
I had an opportunity a few years ago to consult with the Peruvian government about transforming their old data (coordinates of triangulation stations) into ITRF, but we could not agree on an hourly rate.?ÿ
I've seen that before to represent a barrier, a wall and manmade formation to control drainage and perhaps for errosion control and in some instances a defense line against nature and invasions.
Maybe something the inca built...
I think it might be slide protection for the railroad below. Dam the soil, not water.
