Virus protection question

My AVG is up for renewal - but I have a question....

If I use my phone (Android) as a mobile hotspot for my laptop, should the phone have virus protection? Does the laptop still need it? If I am on the internet on the phone, there is no virus protection at work, that I know of.
If I have the choice of connecting to a wifi network or to use my phone's hotspot, which is more secure?
I have 5GB of data on my phone plan so I never go over.
I don't have anything against AVG - but it's about to help itself to $59 of my money and I just wondered...

I hesitate to recommend anything that costs. Wendell posts a cocktail of protection sources infrequently, most if not all are freeware.

Vern,
I think I'm paying for AVG Ultimate @ around $99 a year (don't quote me on that). It covers all of my machines including Android devices. If you have ever had a virus eat your data, $99 is well worth the cost to cover all of your machines.
