I'm looking into a reliable Survye Module and i have been evaluating Carlson these past couple of days. I do have some questions though.

-First off why are the points not dynamic and you need to write back and forth into an external crd file? Like you move a point, you have to update the crd. You add somethign to the crd, you have to redraw the points. In civil3d these things happen automatically. Like you move a point the databse is instanly notified and rewritten.

-When i need to define a polyline to setup a deed, how can i name it with Characters instead of numbers? Lets say i draw a 5 sided closed polyline and i update the CRD based on that entity. Instead of it being called 1-2-3-4-5-1 i want it to be called A-B-C-D-E-A.

-Can you use database fields inside the dialogs? I like to include the square meters of an area on the center of my polyline. Theres an option to label a polyline in Carlson but inside the options for that command you can set the label of what it will say. Instead of plain text, i want it to display the area, and be dynamic as well. So if i move/edit vertices it will refreash and display the new area

-When i draw the points table, i have trouble arranging the size of the table. I have the standards of what my table is supposed to look like, but how do i apply inside the dialog, still cant figure it out.

-I also find text sizes appear small. I set metric on project settings with horiznal scale of "200" but text are almost half of what they should appear. Is there any good documentation of how to handle that?

Carlon uses a point number based crd file and point numbers are used to define point to point.

The point table size of things are managed under table default values and should match the values in drawing settings in most procedures.

In settings dnter the text size you desire and ignore ghe values at the command prompt .

I found it best to develop a drawing templet that contains the line values, font setting and size and other wanted settings for layers and print options to open at the beginning of a new drawing to open and save under the new drawing name before downloading point files.

I learned on Adcad and Carlson has its learning curve that I believe is worth the effort.
Most everything is straight forward from the manual and the demo version is that.
The actual product is very capable of being customized to your user needs.

I also find it best to open carlson program and load a file rather than double click on a file and have Carlson be the default program to open that kind of file.
Your commands will function properly as opposed to simply being able to view the file.

Under settings, there should be a general settings button, in general setting there is bunch of check boxes that basically turn on most dynamic functions.

Under area defaults....add meters (tipo...click on meters and then right click, this gets to the label customize screen)...since you changed your setting above the label will become dynamic.

Table defaults....I suggest checking your scalar size. It is probably set to .8...match the scaler multiplier to your requirements.

As to the points....I prefer Carlson way, keeps engineers from moving my points around. You can use the move point command to do what you want.

If you use the "Points" pulldown "Move Points" command, the crd is updated automatically.

The "Create Points Table" screen gives you many opportunities to change settings.

When you choose "Draw Point", start with number A, the next number will automatically be B.

It is not just the points is that you need to redraw anything. Lets say you have set a polyline, and you want to add a point or move a vertex location. You'll then have to reset the deed, legal description, point tables and everything manually instead of just refreshing immediately on its own to reflect that change. How is that not a pain, and a cause for error. I could just as easily forget to redraw the point table and plot a plan that displays the previous misplaced coordinate that just changed and i'd feel like an amateur.

i can't wait for a few years from now when the inevitable thread appears wherein somebody complains their CAD won't cut line for them.

Carlson Software is very complete in terms of functionality and i am so far enjoying this evaluation. Just as a perfectionist its either that i find some missing details, or parts that i have not discovered yet. One thing i believe they could have done better, is compartmentalised dialog options in a more intuitive way so that they new user would know which are the basic toogles to focus his attention on, and which options are the advanced ones that seldom need any tinkering with. Cause right now things are so overwhelming when you enter a dialog and you see all of these options/toggles/settings.

I saw Bruce Carlson at a conference 2 years ago, and suggest that very thing. A beginner - intermediate - advanced setting which dialed up the interface as to not overwhelm the newbie.
