Can you install the Windows XP virtual pc on Windows 8?

I've used that to download legacy equipment to Windows 7. You have to grab the USB device on the USB menu at the top of the window.

It's not the nine pin. It's gotta be the win8 driver. Which is not included on the disk. Or com port issue. I have tried all the usb ports.

I'm sure you've probably already tried this, but, have you made sure the COM PORT setting on your USB port and Data Collector match?

Go to the USB/COM daptor website and download the latest WIN 8 driver. When they they made and shipped your adaptor your WIN 8/computer combination probably did not exist.

Although this was well prior to the advent of Windows 7 or 8, I was trying to help a guy get his data collector to communicate with his new laptop.

After figuratively going around the world only to come in the back door, I discovered that he was trying to simplify his connection by using a gender-changer between his USB-to-serial adapter, or he had bought on of the correct gender to connect directly to the port on his data collector.

Even though he had all the connection worked out so he could use the minimum number of components, nothing in his chain of connection between the data collector and the computer was a null-modem device. All data collectors connecting over a serial connection must include a null-modem component in the chain.

If you do not know if there is a null-modem component in your connection, that would be one of the first things I would check. The USB to serial adapter device is almost certainly not null modem. If you are connecting it some way directly to the HP48 in an environmental case, you can add a null-modem gender changer to the mix.

May not be the problem but it is something to consider.

Not that this will help any, but I've always had trouble downloading the 48 to Win-7, I imagine Win-8 is the same. I have my old laptop with XP that I use if the 48 gets used in the field. (not usualy, but occasionally, when the nifty FC2600 takes a dislike to me!)

The XP emulator is probably your best bet.

I'm in the field the next few days. So plenty of time to work on it in the hotel room. I will post back if I get it to work.

Thanks

Hey, I struggled with similar hardware headaches when I first installed Windows 8, until I discovered that Windows 8 by default will not install unsigned drivers. Of course almost 100% of the legacy drivers are unsigned, so basically this will result in some issue trying to get the Windows 8 computer to talk to older hardware. There is a way to install unsigned drivers though which is what solved my issue. Check out this link How to install unsigned drivers
