There are a couple of Recons w/ Carlson Surv CE on eBay. Claims to have robotic module, I have an APL 1A. Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks

I'd be careful with the Ebay SurvCE DCs. Many of the ones that claim to have the full version, including GSP, Robotics, and Roads, are hacked. Other than that, I don't have any advice about the APL 1A.
Hacked? Does that mean that they have a bootleg copy of the software?
N
Yes. I verified with a dealer. Hacked/Cracked/Boot Legged, whatever you want to call it, they are not legal copies.
Ok, that is sort of a bummer.... makes ebay harder to use.
And, it is real bad, for Carlson.
Maybe they will figure out a way to code into them a mechanism where it has to call home, (carlson) and get verified.

I wonder if those could be loaded with demo versions? I recall that option available on the older Recon's.

Absolutely. I guess you could ask the seller for the serial number, and try to verify that with a dealer, but I don't know if they'd participate if there is nothing in it for them. The thing to look out for is units that have all 4 items (including Roads) activated. That's the redflag that is may not be a legal installation of Carlson.
If you look at Ebay, there are usually brand new Recons and Nomads for say for $1000 with Full SurvCE. That doesn't make any sense since the program itself is costs about 3 grand ... so I guess that is another red flag.
CWLawley has mentioned this a couple of times.

Due to a recent increase in fraudulent licenses of Carlson SurvCE being offered/re-sold on on-line auction sites such as eBay, Carlson recently implemented a policy change regarding the re-sale of SurvCE through on-line auction sites. Carlson's new policy regarding software purchases through on-line auction services such as eBay is as follows:
>Please note that Carlson does not allow distribution of its products by any Carlson authorized distributors on eBay. Any Carlson Software products purchased on eBay are unauthorized copies of our products. If you do buy any Carlson Software products from eBay, you do so at your own risk. Those software copies will not be supported, warranted nor upgraded by Carlson Software. Furthermore, you may be subject to legal action for using illegal software.

>If you have purchased copies of our software from eBay, Carlson asks that you cease the use of those products and contact our office. In the event of you have obtained illegal copies of our products through good faith purchases or honest mistakes, we can work out a fair resolution.

How does Carlson distinguish between online auction resales and person-to-person resales?
Same difference - the license is granted to the original purchaser of the software. If I have a copy of SurvCE and sell it, the license is not transferred.

I bought a copy from a colleague a couple of years ago, went to the Carlson website and transferred the S/N into my name. Has that process changed?
Edit: What I bought was a Leica robot and Allegro CX w/SurvCE. Still, I think all I had to enter on the website was the S/N of the software.
I wouldn't be surprised that you did. Maybe growth is requiring them to re-adjust due to increase in scam artists scamming them. Usually, there's a few that ruin it for everybody, isn't it the way it works? :-/
Jim,
I did the same thing back in 2007. I purchased a RTK system that ran with a Topcon FC1000. I sent them a copy of the bill of sale, and they transferred the license into my name. When that data collector died, they allowed me to transfer it to my Ranger 200T.
Great folks to work with. It sounds like times have changed as far as the transferring of licenses, though.

Topcon APL1s don't work on SurvCE after version 2.09
Just be aware that the Topcon APL1 or APL1A total stations are not supported (don't know why, its a dang good robot) by Carlson SurvCE in the later versions. I have an APL1 and have to run it on SurvCE version 2.09. Version 2.62 was supposed to work with it but doesn't really.
