I need a couple of printers for ledger side (17 X 11) and legal
for some legacy software, HPGL/2 language. I have called several suppliers
without any help. Someone posted here about how good the new Brother printers
were but they are not compatible with that language. What will work? My
old printers are needing repair, but I just as soon replace with new.
For my large plats,I use an HP 750C which is an wonderful plotter.

HPGL/2 language is "Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language", a proprietary language and they do not share the code to other manufactures... (= SOL)
is there some way that you can "print/plot" to a file?
If the printer spec's do not specifically include HPGL/2 as something that is supported, will it not work. The sales people do not seem to have a clue.
We've been using a Brother printer Multi Function (print/scan/copy) and it works fine but haven't had it long enough to check out cost per page.
A work around would be if your old software can produce a PDF - then print the PDF to a brother printer. Just a thought.
Most of the new hp printers states HPCL as the language. Would that cover all the other? The printers that I need to replace are HP Designjet Colorpro Cad. That's the product. I have had them about six years.
I have yet to find something that is similar.
I need to print everything from stuff off of the internet to ledger size drawings.
For 11x17 color prints we have had good luck with the Xerox Phaser 7500PS.
I have an HP 7500A wide format all-in-one that maybe will do what you want. Seems to be a pretty good unit.
Charles,
I checked the HP 7500A specs. Language imulation is PCL 3GUI.
That's the question. Will this work for HPGL/2, et al.
If the 7500A would work for my I would buy two of them.

If you can somehow take the HPGL/2 concern off the table (I have no idea if that is relevant or not), then I recommend the Brother MFC-6490CW.

One would think that HPGL/2 (Hewlett Packard Graphics Language) would be compatible with HP PCL (Printer Command Language). The salemen that I have asked had that "deer in the headlights" look when I posed the question. Surely someone would know. I will admit that know nothing beyond surveying.

I have that one and I love it.
I must agree with the Brother printers.
Have had the 6490CW for a few years with no problems.
Will print from most any device wired or wireless.
The newest model is the J6710DW.
Both are a two tray system and will print from an SD card, USB thumb drive.
Will scan to many formats b/w and color and OCR.
Other models have one tray, touch panel control, web connection.
The only thing I cannot get it to do is print from my Windows98.
I have a few tricks loaded on my XP Pro that will allow me to print those files.

Unfortunately the MFC-6490CW is no longer in production. When mine failed under warranty it was replaced with the Brother MFC-J6710DW. It is equal in every respect except the paper trays are a better design and build quality.
my very positive experience with the two Brother printers can be read here: [msg=181957] http://beerleg.com/index.php?mode=thread&id=181957 [/msg]

PS: my failed printer was attributed to a power surge burning out an internal fuse. It was repaired at a local shop for 650 pesos ($52 US dollars)
John: is there some why you can print to a file and then print that file without the use of HPGL?
I looked at the specs amd can only find the same language that you listed. I'd have to do some looking to see if I have ever tried to use any HPGL printing function from any document. I have mine hooked up wireless. There is not a parallel cable connection so I can't use my cogo or cadd programs to print through it. It only has USB & wireless capabilities. I tried to find a parallel to USB "B" cable, but so far as I can find out there is none available.
It will connect with a cat5 Lan cable which is recommended when located close to the computer.

What is a cat5 Lan cable or what sort of connection is it?
Every computer has an RJ-45 LAN jack.
That type of connection will not work as I need either a parallel or serial connection to communicate with the program printer/plotter functions.
I'm assuming that you have .plt files. It looks like there is software available for viewing and converting them to pdf, or printing them to another machine.
