I got a request for a bid to do the boundary line for the east line of a ranch. The line runs north-south through three sections. The engineer is doing some work and wants to make sure about this line. He says he has the PLS lines as if it's some standard nomenclature that means something everyone knows.
Just what are they talking about when a CAD guy says PLS lines? Where are these mysterious lines found? Is the GCDB generally referred to as PLS, or EarthPoint, or the county GIS? I would like to know just what these guys are talking about cause I keep hearing the term and they can't seem to define it beyond just saying I have the PLS lines. One thing is for sure, I've never seen the "PLS" lines be very close to the real position.

I have seen the term refer to anything from County GIS to shape files from various sources. As you are no doubt aware these can be derived from field tied Corners on datum or protracted perfect sections (or other options in between). He probably expects a quote around $300 to verify 'his' lines too...
It seems to me they mean Public Land System lines. Maybe kind of a general term for section and quarter section lines.
This happens all the time when people have only a minor familiarity with the subject at hand. A couple of days ago I overheard two of my daughters talking about something called air bee and bee, or something like that. They thought it was great and had nothing but good experiences with it, whatever it was. Yesterday I read a newspaper story discussing Airbnb. BAMMM! So that's what they were talking about.
It's BLM metadata.

Lots of programs and apps that can utilize shape files jump on this stuff. Including one of my clients' GIS department. Some people think it's gospel.

There are some websites to download everything from the BLM data to local data. Some of it isn't too bad, but it can range off from a couple of feet to more than a thousand. I had one recently where the lines were shifted about 1/2 a forty, 660' and someone turned into the board of control a preliminary map with them as a basis, acreage calcs and all.
The sad part is that there is a record of survey filed with all the corners in the area tied to SPC, and corner records, and subdivisions,,,,,
