Open Office Writer

i use it on my wife's computer at home, works great, no problems.

I installed it on my work laptop. It works great except for paste. If I copy text from an outside source it works once then paste is grayed out after that. Have to save and close and reopen the document then it works once. I can copy and paste inside the doc all I want but only once per session from outside. I think maybe it's having trouble accessing the clipboard, not sure.

Windows 7 pro.

I have Word on there but this particular document is an open office doc so I want to keep it that way if I can. Don't want to buy office for my wife's computer because I'm cheap.

I've been using Libre Office which is very nearly identical to Open Office. They branched off a couple years ago. I agree, its a very good word processor, especially considering the price. Calc is a very good Excel clone as well.

Dave, try Libre Office. It is also free, like Mark says it is a clone so your formatting should not get messed up ... but I think it is more actively developed. I don't use windows much but I never have such problems in Linux.

I do lots of spread sheets, Calc is excellent.

I learned on Apple Writer in the early 80s and it was a full service program.

Soon afterwards I went Windows because Apple fell behind when it came to memory, storage capacity and limited point numbers in Cogo.

After that I discovered Corel WordPerfect and have been faithful every since.

I use Open Office, Writer and Spreadsheets, it can open and modify Word and Excel documents. You can convert them to the Open Office format. I have Windows 7, without Microsoft Office and it works as the default for doc and xls files.

I did not know that WordPerfect was still around.

I ran WordPerfect back in the 90s on a DOS machine. I thought it was pretty good at the time. There was one useful function called Reveal Codes. It showed you all the formatting codes on the screen so you could tell what was going on. Word will tell you some things about the formatting it's using, but keeps other information secret.

For MS Word, you see more codes by using Alt-F9, although it doesn't show as much as the old WordPerfect. Note that Word stores the codes with the paragraph mark, which is useful to know when adding or deleting lines.

I have opened all of it for use a few times, use WordPerfect every day.

WordPerfect automatically opens and converts every other word and picture format I've thrown into it and seamlessly places it in a document inside a box to drag into place and resize.

I consider this one of my trophy finds on EBay

I suspect the problem is the Acrobat Reader (I'm copying and pasting from PDF files).

I copied and Adobe gave me an error message. So I pasted into notepad then into writer and it worked fine.

So I'm updating the acrobat reader.

yes the updated Acrobat reader fixed the problem.

It wasn't Open Office's fault after all.

Looks like Open Office is on the rocks. LibreOffice is still going strong.

I adopted Libre Office when my install of Windows 10 wouldn't allow me to authorize my copy of MS Office. I now use Writer and Calc regularly, with only minor complaints. However, when I tried using Base with the MS Access database that I use in running my business, I found that it was painfully -- unusably -- slow, so I bought a standalone copy of Access 2016. Access is the one Office app that used to come bundled with Office Pro, but no longer. I think you have to go to an Enterprise or other very pricey bundle to get Access now, unless you go standalone. It less than $200, so not outrageous, considering that I'm pretty reliant on it.
