We're having to replace a FC-200 data collector but have been denied the funds to also replace the Total Station. Anyone use a non-Topcon controller with a Topcon 9003 robotic? I'm not really a Topcon enthusiast and when the time comes to replace the TS I'd like to have options to go Trimble or other and have a GPS hybrid unit...probably 2-3 years out. Not too happy, but I don't write the checks around here. Thanks.

I can't say the best controller would be a third party vendor, as you are suggesting. Because these days it is always best to match the vendors hardware with their own software, to ensure solid performance of all they have to offer.

There are several configurations of the GPT-9000 robot to connect to on board Spread Spectrum radio. Are you using it with an RC-3 or RC-4?. If you're using the RC-3, then your FC-200 would have had an attached external SS radio to communicate to the instrument. I don't think you will not find a third party controller with that attached SS radio. Your choices would then be to try finding a Fantam SS radio, once made by Hayes Instrument (I have one for sale), or you can eliminate the SS radio, and purchase a Parani-SD1000 Bluetooth Serial Adapter. This will give you long range bluetooth from the GPT-9000, and allow you to connect to many bluetooth enabled controllers.

The RC-4 is already bluetooth.

Now your software choices to be compatible with multiple vendor platforms would be Carlson SurvCE/PC, Microsurvey, and TDS now Spectra. Maybe others I am not a where of.

RC-3 of course. I don't want so many seams in the system. I'm leaning towards purchasing a used controller to get us through the remaining life of the instrument. I am impressed with many software platforms and Fieldgenius looks great all around. Our local vendor is good and I'm sure we'll have the opportunity to test run several setups before we make a decision. Thanks.

I'm not thrilled with Spectra Precision Survey Pro (the software formerly known as TDS) but it does support a wide range of instruments. Another to consider is Carlson SurvCE.
