I would like to move layers from my old compter AutoCAD 2007 to my new one AutoCAD 2010. I would like to just move a layer file and not bring in a drawing.

I can't find a layer file, does one exist?

thanks,

Forrest

Beats me!

Couldn't you just open the 2007.dwg, turn on (and/or THAW) ALL of the layers, erase EVERYTHING, and SAVE it as 2010.dwg.

When you open it in 2010, all of the layers (same colors, linetypes, etc.) should be there.

Subject of course to blocks, xrefs, etc., which you should be able to purge, detach, etc.

Loyal

Why not just insert your old default dwg into your new default dwg? That'd what I always do.

To do it the hard way, if you have express tools, you can save the layer state( on-off,thawed-frozen, color and the other good info) from the layer command. saves as a XXXX.las file. From express tools run LMAN, this saves the layer names in a a file type of XXXX.lay. This will work if the older and newer versions have these commands available.

Save the two from the old, copy to the new, then run LMAN first and the layer state restore second.

I would copy the dwt out of 2007 into the applicable folder in windows for 2010. Then when you begin a new drawing, all of the old layers should act right.

At least this works with Carlson whenever I make an upgrade.

(ssget "X" )

A "delete everything" tip - if you want to truly pick everything in the drawing to delete it, use (ssget "X" ) when it asks to select entities - if you just turn on and thaw all the layers and try to pick everything with a window, you will likely miss a bunch of other hidden stuff, which will keep you from being able to purge certain blocks and other stuff. I learned that one the hard way many years ago.
