I rountinely need to clean up my points in a drawing and make all of my points sequential beginning with point No. 1.

For instance, if I had Pts 3, 4, 5, 9, 15, 16, in a drawing and want them to be Pts 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. I know how a couple of ways to do this in Land Desktop but not sure how to do it in C3D. Any suggustions?

I'd simply export to excel, renumber then import back to C3d

I would rather do it in C3D without going into another computer program.

I think you can select the points, right click and choose "edit points". A list of the points will come up, similar to Excel, which will allow you to make your changes.

Mack,

Short of renumbering each point, one at a time, about the best you can do in C3D is Renumber with an additive factor by selecting the points in a point group.

The C3D forum has chewed on that one for years to no avail. Jered's solution is the easiest and fastest.

Dave, applying an additive factor will not get the numbers sequential, right?

No, unfortunately, it won't.

In the standard Civil3d workflow where you import data through the Survey tab > Import Events you cannot change point numbers. You must change the imported event data. It took us a while to figure out how to best use this new functionality as we too have and continue to have the need to renumber points as you described. You must have your point numbers set prior to importing, plain and simple and slightly frustrating.

With that said, if you import your data through the points > import/export points command you can edit any of the point data manually. However, with this method the points are not imported into the database, just the drawing. Depending on your standard workflow and such you could import your points this way, renumber them and then import points from drawing throught the Survey database. We have done this on occassion for the very reason you have identified.

HA, I too would RATHER do everything in one program.B-)
I Would RATHER find all monuments on a project.:woot:
I would RATHER only have to work three days a week.:stakeout: BUT Allas......
I use the tools in my toolbox that most effectively and efficiently get a product in and out the door.:car::stakeout: :totalstation: :mp: :computer: :mail: :gift: I use a spreadsheet many times through the day and in some way shape or form every project has a spreadsheet for something. In this situation, without knowledge that civil 3d can even do a global renumber other than the additive factor, I'd pick the spreadsheet. If you find something in c3d, let us know.;-)

A better way of saying it would be "for the price I pay in licenses and subscription I would expect the software to do common tasks without jumping through hoops".

Send me an email to dotson [at] dotsoft [dot] com with details on your Civil3D version and perhaps a small example file. Should be able to put together a tool to do it (at no charge). If you use point numbers (not names, why it has both is beyond me) the points will likely need to be reinserted (in code).

A possible way:

Make a new Point Group. In the Include tab, use the "Selection Set in Drawing" to graphically select all points. All the points will then show up in the "With numbers matching" box as comma or dash delimited. Copy the info in that box to your clipboard. OK and close the Point Group box.

Next, make a pline (or 3dpoly if you want to retain elevations) by point number. So pline command, then type 'pn in the command line. Paste the info on your clipboard at the prompt.

Now erase all your old points (pucker factor, assuming you saved a backup drawing...)

Now, on the "Home" ribbon, Use Points->Create Points-Miscellaneous->Polyline vertices.

Haven't done a test run, but this should work, I think...

*Side note, for 3dpoly by point number, you have to pick the first one graphically I think, and then use the 'pn command entry...

SSP,

That's more than a little creative, but would it renumber the points in the general order of the original points or would it renumber them higgledy-piggledy? I'm scared to try it.

Remember, the pline went through the points in order, so when the pline is renumbered, the new points will follow the same order.

SSP,

OK, that would probably work for the Point Numbers, but the Descriptions would be gone forever. I'll still give you an A+ for creativity.

Ah, yes, a fatal flaw. Hadn't thought about that...
