We compile our field data using Topcon's MAGNET Field and then export the point data using .txt files in PNEZD format. Is there a way using Topcon's point attributes feature to export that data in with the point description 'D'? I.E.:
While shooting a sanitary sewer invert (SS INV) and adding an attribute of {SIZE=6"}, can I have the point description displayed as "SS INV 6"" after importing?
Does anyone have a streamlined system for exporting additional data from MAGNET Field to Civil 3D?
Is the easiest way to get automated linework and point attribute data to go through MAGNET Office and then to Civil 3D?
Civil 3d has a very workable field to finish system of it's own, but I don't think that you can import files with more than the five PNEZD elements. You could have your description field be "SS 6" and have the point label interpret that as " 6" SANITARY IE ", or just about anything else.?ÿ?ÿ
We have been using civil 3d primarily, however MAGNET Field seems to offer some time saving attributes. Automated linework would save the drafting portion of a topo. All that would be needed is clean-up. However, I am trying to incorporate these features into our existing workflow without too much disruption. It seems counter productive to change the way we as a firm collect and describe our field data points. Other forums have suggested using multi-codes within magnet field to allow the linework to be automated through angle points (AP), grade breaks (GB) and other sub-descriptive codes. I have not found a way to import that additional multi-code to the same line of the description that would normally be seen and interpreted in the office drafting segment of the process.
Arguably, an angle point (AP) would not need to be called out in the point code descriptions if the linework was automated, but until the field crews are comfortable, reliable, and fast with the new process, it is a nice check to have that 'full' description.
Yes you can do this with Custom Topcon Export and design the styles in MAGNET FIELD. Also, if you install Magnet Field on your PC that has Civil3d installed

C3d will do automated linework, duck soup. Not like LDD, which sort of did it but was really a piece of crap. Moreover, C3d's F2f functionality is well tailored to complement it's DTM creation.
The C3D Help files will tell you how to code the Description Key Set to modify your field codes into the end result that you want.?ÿ

We also use the Custom Export (out of Magnet), we use a code, then put the additional information in as a note that is added to the end of the code. So a tree code might be "FIR" and the note would be "12 TDL CIR12". The export "D" (PNEZD) is "FIR 12 TDL CIR12".
The result would be a point in ACAD with the following displayed description: 12" FIR. There would also be a 12' radius circle around it showing the dripline, and the symbol would indicate a coniferous tree. That particular coding makes use of both the Descriptor Key Set, Figure Preset Database, and the Linework Code Sets. Of course the Style and Point Label Style need to be set up to display your codes correctly as well.

In the field I code trees like TR PALM 14 22, which is a palm tree with a 14" dia trunk and 22' dia canopy.
In C3D, my description key is $2" $1P$3' CANOPY.?ÿ The point is a "Tree" style which brings in the tree block (could be separated into 'type of tree' block like mentioned above).?ÿ the block is scaled on parameter 3, the canopy number in the code ($3), which displays my trees in plan accurately. And the point label is description only, so the point is labeled as:
