Little list of things I'd like in my Drafting Software

In this case, it's Carlson. I'm still on version 2009... but when I upgrade I'd like:

A combination MOVE and ROTATE command. Grab the item, move it, as soon as you click, it sets the SW corner of the item down, and now you are rotating on the SW corner of it. As soon as you right click, it goes back to move, and simply toggles, between move and rotate, until you click done.

A whole palate of leaders, using SPLINE, and having a number of options, including a circle on the end of the leader.

A number of ways to do text, including "TRAIN" Grab and end of the line of text, and you can drag it around, like a little train, and it follows the mouse with spiral curves, and all, so you can lay it along a river, or other entity.
Stretch Text. This simply changes the spacing, or width between of each character, by grabbing and "End of the train" like above, but it simply stretches out the SPACES or the text width, to make it lay where you want it.

I don't have a clue how to do such things, but I did them before, when I hand drafted.... and they are some of the things I miss.

I would settle for a proper basic 2d line command in Carlson Survey embedded not the frustrating one it has we're you have to go through a ridiculous amount of commands to draw a simple 2d line. The lack of one is a serious flaw in my opinion. Microsurvey embedded has it so not sure why Carlson doesn't

Align (al) command will do what you are asking Nate...IT doesn't have the one the fly adjustment.

Total- Would a polyline work for you? Then just type 2dp and you are good to go.

Terminus has pointed out that the align command does a combination move/rotate. I don't know if Carlson has a similar routine.

Autocad has multileaders so you can set up various styles of leaders, with blocks and/or text. I don't use Carlson any more, but they also have some kind of command to draw leaders with preset text that worked okay, but nowhere near as powerful as multileaders. I used Carlson 2014-2016 so perhaps it's not in 2009.

Autocad has a command to draw arc aligned text. Not sure about Carlson. Maybe not what you are looking for, but I've used that when needed to call out curved streets or waterways. If your waterway is winding, use multiple arc aligned text entities.

Autocad has text justifications Align and Fit that will stretch or compress your text. I've never liked the way that looks so I couldn't tell you the difference between them or whether or not Carlson has anything similar. Not even sure if you can use those justifications in MText or multileaders.

By the way, not trying to pick nits, but a lot of people keep talking about Carlson as though it's their drafting software. While's it's obviously used for drafting, and they do have a standalone product with an embedded CAD, there still must be some type of CAD engine involved. It would probably be helpful to specify which CAD engine is being used. I briefly used the Intellicad version, and I know it has limitations (to put it nicely), and from my reading on this site apparently the embedded CAD has limitations also.

Watch out for the ALIGN command when elevations vary (which is usually). This write up explains what can happen and how to avoid it.

2dp is pretty much the same you need to go through many steps to achieve a basic line. In AutoCad and Intellicad you can just draw a 2d line by clicking your starting point and then pointing the cursor by polar or tracking and enter the distance. It's a basic drafting tool and I don't understand why Carlson decided to leave it out of the embedded.

I would like for surface editing to have extend boundary and add points just by selecting them. Also honor breaklines by creating one during editing. I just did a topo with a few thousand points. I had a many areas that were shot later with the total station, some only several shots. What a pain, I was ready to pull out the old computer with pacsoft. Multileader would be nice.

You can add points to a surface in Carlson it's the modify surface menu it would be tedious for more than a dozen points though you can also add and entity(3D polyline)

Type "L" on he command line with my left hand and right click my mouse with the right hand and draw. The only thing that was easier was have an "L" button on my 16 button mouse in the old digitizer days. I could fly back then, in AutoCAD 10.

"PL"/click gets me a 2Dpolyline

What you really want is a USB device to plug in your ear so CAD can read your thoughts.

Can't emphasize this enough.

I just ran across this website. Free LISPs!
This slinky text may be similar to what you are describing about the train text.

So you just randomly draw lines and don't input distance then? That sounds like a great idea.

Once I am in the line format I draw, point to point using snaps on point nodes, endpoints, intersections, or typing point numbers individually or in a series, i.e. 172-193. If I am building a filed map, I may multiple offset a sideline for a series of lots. I can do a radial line using CAD or old style AutoCAD commands.

What I miss are the AutoCAD "Array", "Divide" and "Measure" commands which have been removed from AutoCAD Lite.

Total,

I have Carlson 2010 on intellicad at home and Carlson 2017 on Civil 3D at the office......both programs do what you want. I am not sure why your embedded version doesn't do it. Maybe a call to support is in order.

What is left out of embedded AutoCAD is up to Autodesk, not Carlson.

I'm not trying to speak for Totalsurv, but what I remember a couple of things about Carlson's line and polyline commands that I did not particularly like. First, as he says, you can't just drag your cursor and enter a distance to have it draw a line at that distance and angle (really only useful for cardinal bearings but still useful). Also, it would not remember your last input. For instance, if you start a line, you have to enter a D for Distance (going completely from memory) then enter your bearing or azimuth. When you finished that segment, you had to enter a D again, because it would not default to that. I know it's only one keystroke, but many times I would look up and see that I would need to reenter data. If I think back to EP and LD and LDD and SD and DCA and VisiSoft and VisiCogo and the old mainframe system I first learned on, I can't think of any of those that would make me tell it that I was going to input a distance again and again and again.

But, I'm back working with Civil 3D so I'm a happy guy!

Not true. Carlson have the option to purchase a certain number of the basic commands but chose not to include the normal 2d line (told by Carlson support directly) For example Microsurvey embedded has it. You really should download a demo copy of the embedded version and you might get some insight into what I mean.

It is something that has been posted here a number of times by other posters.

From what I understand in AutoCAD OEM you have to license chunks. You can't simply pick the commands you want, so including one command would bring a lot more with it (and a charge for that chunk that translates to a higher end user price).

By setting the price, I still say Autodesk is in control.

Carlson has to buy something and still be able to resell it and make a profit.

I myself can get by with what I have, but like everyone else, I would like more.
