Has anybody started using the new IntelliCAD yet?

My computer guy has informed me that the compters should be replaced. I've been avoiding it because AutoCAD 2006 does not play perfectly with Windows 7. My machine is the only Win 7 machine in the office and I can feel the latency with the XP capatability mode. I really do not want to give any more money to AutoDesk and I am really considering taking the leap to IntelliCAD this winter.

Gary Rosen (The LandNut) has stated that this is the first version of IntelliCAD that competes, but since Gary is in sales now I would like other opinions.

Thank you

I currently have Carlson with Intellicad (2012) installed with 6.1 version(i think) at home.

I personally love it.

At work they use Autocarp 2009 and sorry I take Intellicad any day.

Take a little getting used to but 99% of commands are the same.

Osnaps are Esnaps .

Processing data ....smooooth.

If I had the choice I would go with it not only $$ but ease of use.

Yearly upgrades are dirt cheap too.

I have Carlson Survey 2009 with IntelliCAD and I agree with the reply above. I use AutoCAD 2010 at work every day and use IntelliCAD for my small "Part-time" private practice. It is a little different but for the most part it is great. I have the 2012 upgrade .... I guess I am just too stubborn to install it!!! Any comments on the 2012 upgrade from 2009 Carlson Survey would also be greatly appreciated, by the time I get 2012 installed I am sure the 2013 version will be available. It is slightly different as commented but for 90% of the functions they are almost equal. I also agree the upgrades are cheap as well and processing ...... I would be lost with out it!!!!!!! for both work and personal use. I work for the federal government and don't have any processing software to be able to take my field data and get it into an AutoCAD .dwg format!!!!

I have to disagree. Intellicad is probably fine if you are using it mainly to do calcs for staking, etc., but for production drafting AutoCAD is worth it. One thing missing from Intellicad that I really notice is grip editing, ICAD has a version but it isn't close to the same.

Have you thought of Bricscad?
I'm not sure if you are wanting surveying routines with Autocad/ Intellicad?

My experience with Intellicad goes back a few years and I am not convinced on it as far as Cad goes. It's too buggy and doesn't handle our large coordinate values here. Geotiffs are hit and miss, more times miss.

Bricscad has a lot of third party applications that work with both that and Autocad. Applications

Personally if it was me and I was only interested in CAD then that is what I would buy.
There is an extremely helpful forum that I have asked some dumb questions on and never left feeling I wish I'd never asked. Forum

Download a demo and give it a whirl. Bricscad

Whatever you get I'd check out prices/ applications available/ support and price.

regards
Richard

Interesting thought, but we have intelliCAD. Our systems have been cad with carlson for almost a decade, so this change will be the simplest. The trouble is with one of my guys. A mutual friend was given intelliCAD and had some discouraging remarks. I use icad when someone sends a dwg in a post 07 format, but I have not done that much with it.
Thanks to all for the comments, I will have to try it out.

If you have Carlson with Intellicad I'd stick with that.
I tried Microsurveys Embedcad(Autocad version) and that was a more 'fluid' program to use. Quite nice actually.

I been on Carlson for 8 years with Autocad embedded .I switched last year to intellicad 6.1 and found it to be OK at best . A lot of little bugs and annoyances . If your doing a map or two a week probably fine. I tried the new verision 2013 and had alot of issues . I went back to the Autocad version.

Thad:

How about the Carlson with the embedded AutoCAD OEM engine. A little more $ but it is a lot cheaper than buying an AutoCAD license every year.

I have the same problem, another year another fee for AutoDesk. I tried going from the Civil3D program back to plain AutoCAD to power my Carlson they wouldn't let me do that, I would have to buy a new license. I am going to quit Civil 3D with 2013 version and see what happens. Carlson will usually work with older versions of AutoCAD , we will see how long I can make it work.

We have two of those licenses floating around. Unfortunately, it's not complete enough for my cad skills. My father has one and it works for him. When he asks me to do something on his machine, I try typing in commands and they fail. I then grumble.

I have tried some things in the 6.1 intellicad that work better than autocad. For example, anyone ever try to add an excel spreadsheet? Now have you tried to show part of the sheet in a viewport? It bleeds through in Acad but not Icad.

So we will see how this change goes. Either way, I have a whiner who will not like whatever choice I make.

Thad:

Yes that is the down side of the embedded AutoCAD commands, if you have used AutoCAD much you will be looking for features that aren't available in the OEM version.

The only other money saving route is to run just plain AutoCAD with no other utilities. It is cheaper to keep up a subscription with the plain version but they won't let you go back, nice guys.

You are a young guy and will have to figure somthing out as you have a long way to go yet in business. It seems like you can pay or change software but it looks like most vendors do the same thing as AutoDesk. There is always Benchmark.

I use Carlson with embedded Autocad and think it is great, coming from Softdesk. Very short learning curve. One of the magazines within the last six months put together a very comprehensive article on the differences between Intellicad and Autocad engines.

One of the things I remember is that Intellicad had been totally rewritten over the course of about five years and 2011 (I believe) was the first release in those five years and was supposed to be vastly improved. If you are getting feedback about pre-2011 Intellicad engines, that is outdated news. If you can find the article, there were a lot of interesting tidbits.
