Been along time Carlson user and just started looking at general cad and see that other posters use it. I am wondering how land surveyor friendly it is ? Carlson and intellicad seem to progress very slow in fixes and irritating bugs on the intellicad side.
Just curious if it is worth the look.

What specific problems have you had with Carlson+intellicad? ...I use it everyday and would never go back to an Autodesk product.

General cad is not an auto desk product. Generic cad was purchased by auto desk, supported it a year or so, then dropped it. General Cad is a windows spin off from Generic Cad. I like it, and would suggest that you give it a try.

Does the demo allow the write block command (wblock)?

Very!

Turn around for an answer regarding a bug or other problem with GCP can be within minutes from the devs. They usually have a full patch, if one is needed, within hours after submitting a bug report.

Yep!

The demo is fully functional, including the Surveyor 3D portion...a dongle is needed to unlock the program.

GCP uses the term 'components' instead of the Acad term 'block'. I have not explored a global component create command in GCP, but if the component directory is available to everyone on a network, then a created component can be shared globally.

Paul:

What about a Generic Cadd 6 drawing (GCD) file. Will they import in and open up and plot? I did a search on Generic Cadd, but there is not much out there now. There was a site that you could download General Cad version 6.1.+ full version for free, but there were a lot of other items that showed up to download and really couldn't tell what was General Cad or some other thing you really did not need or want.

Yep..also will import/export to Acad 2012

Beware of any site that offers GCP other than http://www.generalcadd.com/ Charles

Do you have that sites address?

I was a die hard Generic user..resisted any change until about 2005 or so...best software move I ever made. The guys doing GCP were the ones involved with Generic 6 when Autodesk had control.

Here's a few screenshots of the load/save and Acad save choices..

Here is the site: www.brothersoft.com/general-cadd-pro-81311.html

I also see that general Cad is now vesrsion 10.1 +.

Those sites are probably advertising the same free demo of GCP that GCP's official site offers.

Can you give me an indication of the types of bugs you're running into? Feel free to send any issues to my attention at:

lnelsonATcarlsonswDOTcom

For direct feedback to the IntelliCAD programming team members, issue the SendFeedback command (key this in at the Command: prompt). I communicate regularly with the Development Director of the ITC and he/they work diligently toward resolution of reported problems.

No doubt Carlson is great program , use it everyday for ten years .

But intellicad 6.6 gives me a fit sometimes . Text setting will not hold its size . It reset to 0 during the course of drafting . Google _image is gone , this happened on a automatic upgrade. Plotting is very flaky , like if I want to print multiple copies and I set to print 2 copies it will only print one for example also having trouble printing large drawings from cad landscape to printer portrait . Have to rotate the view in cad . Twist screen stop working , new drawing dialog no longer shows up when creating a new drawing. Landdeskop drawings do not convert too well have strange entities that cannot be worked with .
I know 7 is on its way ,maybe it will work some of this stuff out.

What type of raw data files are you looking to process? What kind of DC do you use? I use TDS and process those files via TDS software, then import into GCD.

I kinda figured that 🙂 had to ask though,

GCP is a excellent Cad platform, with some surveyor features as an option.

You may want to just explore the demo to see if it's the right one for you.

I'd urge you to take a look at the current IntelliCAD 7.1 that is shipping with Carlson 2012. I've been using it exclusively since the first week of January and have no plans to go back to ICAD 6.6.

Tested General Cad all weekend . It appears to be a very stable and powerfull cad platform . Although it takes a a little gettng use to with the two letter commands , I see that it could be pretty fast to use. My only draw back is the lack of advanced surveying support but with all fairnes this may be because I dont know how to use it all that well . I did find many usefull basic surveying commands and feel I could produce a nice map. I also think it would be an excellent platform for a serious surveying software.

Some notable commands I could not find : twist view , bearing and curve tables , auto add points to a polyline .
