I couldn't get NADCON to run on the "alternate" NGS Site today.
I know the Input file is correct (NGS Type 2), but it just would NOT process the file (about 76 7å?' Quadrangle Corners, NAD27 to NAD83).
So I fired up the ol' DOS machine and it processed the file slicker than snot (ancient copy of NADCON 2.10)!
I don't use that machine much anymore, but it always saves the day (when I do).

Great!
I was working several years ago at my former employer's office around 2005 or 2006. One of the summer interns asked me how to copy something on the computer. I told her to shell out to DOS, copy XX.AC$ to XX.DWG
She looked at me with a blank look, and calmly asked me what was DOS. I looked at her, and told her Damn, you just made me feel old and proceeded to show her how to perform the required task.
There are several programs that run DOS inside your current Windows machine: http://www.dosbox.com/
Did anyone ever run Bischoff's COGO? I had to run out an old coordinate file the other day and it was all DOSsy.
"I told her to shell out to DOS, copy XX.AC$ to XX.DWG"
You do realize that copying and renaming a file in windows is far, far easier than that, right?
Mark,
I do now, this took place at least 10 years ago or so.

Back when we ran DOS on our computers, I looked forward to the next OS update. Now, I dread it.
