Back in the old days (the way we always did it days) you could click on an object in a cad drawing and with a quick glance at the layer manager you could see what layer it was on. Is there a way to get the layer manager to be visible at all times instead of just on the Home Tab?

For all the beeps and whistles in 3D, it sure is a P.I.T.A. in the layer management department.

What I do is keep my properties dialog box docked to one side or the other usually the opposite side as the tool space (open properties and right click on the gray part of the panorama), You can also set it to auto hide(same steps). I also had to set my layer manager to be the old style and not have it show all the time it slowed my computer way down on large jobs (layerdlgmode: 0).

I have tried docking the Layer manger and the Properties dialogs but they are constantly popping in and out and are more a distraction than a help. My laptop screen is small enough that I don't have room for all the ribbons and toolboxes. I am already working in a 6" x 9" box of my 16" screen. I would rather have most of my screen occupied by the drawing. Here are a few screen captures.

I dock my Layer Manager, Xrefs and Toolspace on the Left Side of my screen and have them autohide. IE. They simply open up when I hover my mouse over them. I also always have my properties box docked and open on the right side of my screen.

You can see the 3 Docked Dialog boxes mentioned in their closed state here.

And here is what it looks like opened.

This layer manager is the one I would like to see always open. You can actually work with it.

I know you limit on screen space. If you go to the view tab on ribbon. All the way to the right there is toolbars pulldown. Click autocad: then Layers. You should see a layers toolbar come up. This will automatically display the layer when clicked. Or you can keep porp dia box open at all times. Hope this helps.

Vern,

How about sticking it up in the Quick Access Toolbar? I've got mine permanently parked there. You can also put any command in the Quick Access Toolbar.

Dave

more screen space please

another tip is to modify the ribbon to "minimize to tabs" it's the button on the very right (past express tools) that looks like a round rectangle with an arrow pointing up. click it a few times to see the different options. It can free up about an inch vertically if you go to the smallest one.
